Back in August, I applied for a Conductor role based out of Glasgow. This was a talent pool application, so wasn't expecting too much at the time. I got an email a week later to say that my application was still under consideration, then a few days later I succeeded the shortlist.

I was given another email to complete some psychometric tests including the SCAAT test. There were 6 in total. I spent a few days preparing and completed them all. Bear in mind, you are given 7 days to complete them from the day the link was sent.

Two weeks later, I received an email to say TPE wanted to meet. I selected a date and met two lovely ladies at Union Street. Initially I was given the wrong address but found it quickly after. I was expecting it to be a formal sit-down but they were very relaxed and happy. It made me a lot calmer.

They gave me some information about the job and what it endures, including unsocial starts and finishes (0340 start and 0122 finish), as well as what routes I'd be doing. Conductors were to cover both the East and West Coast, and were to use company funded taxis to travel to Edinburgh. There were 14 questions in total, mostly about previous experience. Please be prepared to give examples of safety and customer service duties you completed in the past (use the STAR technique). One question I was stuck on was "did you ever go against the discretion of a manager when completing a duty?". I managed to get through it though.

Today, I got an email to say I was unsuccessful. I was absolutely gutted. I spent three months going through all this process. Some advice I'd give is, make sure you're in a job where safety and customer service is your priority.

One question I have is, should I email Transpennine and ask about feedback? They gave me the email in case I had any queries but I'm unsure whether to go ahead. I have applied for an Apprenticeship with Scotrail, but doesn't start until August 2025.

I would ask them, the worse they can say is no. At least you'll know what you need to do to improve next time.

Being in a job where health and safety and customer service may help you it isn’t a requirement.

All of us use health and safety everyday otherwise we couldn’t make a cup of tea without scolding ourselves daily.

As regards customer service, if not in a role that uses that we can always refer to a time we received good customer service and how we appreciated it and would learn from that and apply it in a future role.

How long was it from receiving the shortlist email to getting the test sent through?

Sorry to hear about the process you went through and trust me I have been there and know exactly how it feels to have worked so hard yet not get the job.

Did you manage to email them (Transpennine) to ask for feedback?

If you haven’t I would still go back to them and ask for it, as mentioned above the worst they could say is no.

However emailing for feedback makes you look interested. Use this feedback to help the next application.

It’s never nice to get a knock back for a job but it’s an extra learning experience that allows for learning and developing ready for the next role.

Given this thread originates from November, and the original poster hasn’t been on the Forum since, I’m going to draw this to a close.
