Transpennine Express Sandwiches

I'm on a return trip to Manchester from Newcastle using TP Express next week, their website shows all the food and drink they do and basically beside snacks the only food they sell in Sandwiches.

It says to ask about the available sandwiches at the time rather than listing them, so has any one bought sandwiches from them before, or know what kinds they typically sell? I'm picky about food and like to find out things like this beforehand. :roll:

BLT and some sort of chicken offering springs to mind. Probably cheaper and nicer to buy it at M+S at Piccadilly. Word of warning, the trolley will get off at York so make sure if you are buying a sarnie, to get it before York!

Sounds like standard fare, thanks for the advice about the trolley, these are the things they don't tell you on their website! Once I get there I'm checking into a hotel so won't need anything once there, just in case I get hungry on the journey.

I wouldn't bother if u are even slightly picky about your food! I would suggest following previous advice and buy good quality sandwich cheaper from Manchester Piccadilly station!

Sandwiches used to be great when Transpennine trolley staff were all self employed under NorthernSpirit and Arriva Trains Northern. This shower ruined it. Sandwiches were from the award winning Brambles and it was quite rare to see most of the staff actually eating their own poison for once, they really were nice butties. My favourite was the Lincs Sausage and mustard mayonnaise. Mmmm!

1999-2001 we were making a fortune when self employed.
Sales of £1500 a week was £500 wages.
eg, you'd sell a coffee for a quid. 66p went to the Contractor, Xpress catering, 34 left for you.

The sell the usual Rail Gormet stuff, if you want sandwich etc. reasonably cheap you're better off buying it from Boots on piccadilly, or Greggs outside in Gateway house, not WHSmith, the're horrible, and M+S is nice but expensive...

I wouldnt call M&S expensive. I find them very reasonable & very good quality with meat from Britian & not Brazil.

Last time i had a TPx sarnie was last April. Both the tuna/peppers & cheese ploughman where fresh, well filled, very tasty & at £3 not out of the way for an on board caterer.

I'll agree with WH Smith. Their prices at railway stations are a disgrace. Man Vic - small bottle of lukozade at 1.70!

I agree; presumably the same brigade that think Waitrose and Sainsbugs are expensive. I don't know anywhere else you can get a decent sandwich for £1 anymore. Even Tesco Express around here over the road from M&S have put their sarnies up to £1.05!

Hopefully nothing as they are based at York and Manchester on the north routes (not including Scottish services). I remember you saying that you'd bought something off the trolley on a previous thread, so I'll not doubt you but either this was a one-off or it could have been a pilot to wage how much demand there is.

^^I think people got confused, the op is travelling TO manchester from newcastle, not from manchester pic. I'd agree though get something before the food on tpx isn't worth it. unfortunately newcastle station is pretty p*** poor (expensive and poor quality costa, whsmith, pumpkin et al) for food outlets, so you'd probs have to get something before you get there, basically take something from home. there is a greggs across the road from central staion I guess, which is cheap...

I'd just stock up somewhere in Newcastle beforehand. Saves the hassle of trolley and you'll probably have more to eat for far less

Have to admit, it was a while back and I have never noticed since but it did happen! I recalled it even more because I actually snagged my coat on the trolley as I was getting on at Darlington, the trolley was in the doorway of the middle coach. As I haven't seen it since (haven't been looking mind you!) then it was probably some sort of trial as you say.

As for places to get stuff from at Newcastle, the usual suspects on the station itself are Costa, Starbucks, Pasty Shop, Smiths, Burger King, Centurion Cafe. Directly opposite the station you have Subway, Fatso's, Greggs and another Starbucks so there is no shortage of places to grab something before a journey.

Not in my manor they dont. Sainsbury's and M&S shine above all others and always have. Same staff who seem very very loyal.

First Transpennine are causing trouble again this week mistreating their trolley staff.

An idiot manager sent out a memo staff must sign stating :-
1. Do not sit down on the train.
2. Do not eat on the train.
3. Do not drink on the train.
4. Do not sit down on the platform.
5. Only use phone during shift to call orders in.
6. Only have break in service centre (which has no seating, or canteen facilities).
7. Do not eat or drink any products off the trolley.

The company regularly breach legal break allowances as it is impossible for a member of staff on 14 hour shifts to walk with their trolley from the train, have a twenty minute break, get an order and get back to the next train ten minutes before departure. Notice that Rail (aka Fail Magazine / Liar) and the rest of the press never report things like this, as they are worried about losing a valued advertiser?

TPE pathetically hide behind the usual 'oh, not us' rubbish by blaming their contractor RailGourmet, who ultimately end up in court for trying to stick to FirstGroups stupid illegal contracts.
