Travelling Edinburgh to Manchester with Transpennine next week on the 06:15, and trying to reserve a seat. I've found the seating plans on TPE's web site but it's not clear which way round the train will be, and it's a long time since I rode that route. Is coach A at the front heading to Edinburgh?

Drat, I only added that bit at the last moment, and managed to get it completely wrong! Now fixed.

I did the journey every week for a while and from memory the 06:15 from Edinburgh was a fairly fixed formation. I just can't remember which way round it was!

It seemed to be much more variable on the way back.

It's pot luck which way round the unit will be. They can only be labelled in a certain order from 1 end (DMS1 is coach A) otherwise the seats won't line up properly. Sometimes A leads north, sometimes D leads north. The only consistent method is to have A-D leading out from Manchester Airport. Even on 8 car trains the coaches may not be in proper alphabetical order, they can be D-A and H-E. If you want a visual clue for a 350 then look for the pantograph which is always coach B on a 4 coach train.

OK, thanks both for your advice. Looks like I'll have to take my chances then!

How do they end up the wrong way round when confined to Manchester Airport to Scotland?

Turning them regularly keeps everyone on their toes. They also get turned when a fault means a cab needs burying or an infrastructure failure means they go out in a loop (or reverse in Carstairs station) so they can sometimes end up facing the other way.

Anyone else think this thread was about TPE placing an order for coaches?!

Do some units potentially ECS between Edinburgh and Glasgow/Corkerhill, thus can get turned on the "third" side of Carstairs triangle?

Surely then it isn't that difficult to reverse it by going round two side round, which wouldn't be too difficult surely (or turn it elsewhere eg Manchester Airport)

Don't know if any units every ECS Ardwick-Airport via Wilmslow, which would be another source of turned units?
