Tomorrow the wifi / media server on the class 350 fleet at TPE will be switched on.

Testing has given 3G speeds (4G where masts allow) from Man Airport all the way to Glasgow and Edinburgh. The train uses 3, EE and Voda for signal finding.

The 185 fleet plan for wifi has now changed - originally was due to be turned on after 12 units had been fitted with it, but now it will be activated when emerging from refurbishment - basically any 185 with the new interior decor will also have working wifi.

That would definitely work nice

Perhaps so but it would only work on the 350's.

The 185's and the future 397, 802 and Mk5 sets are all an odd number of vehicles so how would you make it symmetrical?

A better idea would be a better livery overall :p

The 350 is one of those that looks good with 'most any paint job. Just wish Siemens had built more of them! They're proven; good on short runs and can hold their own on longer runs also. I'd kill to have a Desiro on my local service as the 323s are too short for late-2010s standards and doubling up isn't an option. Plus air con is a bonus in summer!

I agree, they look weird without the front numbers though.

I tried the media system on 350403 over the weekend, works well but not many programmes online yet, very limited number with most showing Coming Soon. It had this poster inside

There is supposed to be an extension on the app soon so I expect the films etc will play better through that than a web browser which might be why they haven't been released yet. There will be a proper launch of the service later this year once the fitting of 185s had started. So far I've found the WiFi coverage to be consistent with no drop out.

It's good to see it finally coming into use though, a huge improvement for people who maybe going further then I did e.g. Scotland.

Indeed, I wish this had been there when I was commuting from Edinburgh to Lancaster.

I have been informed by a few members of traincrew that the new vinyls on 350404 are already peeling away from the drivers side of one of the cab ends, and that the seating numbers on the exterior of one of the carriages on the unit are totally wrong....

Might have to get have one looked at by the Ardwick team asap.

Can someone confirm the total power in a unit? P5 has 4x250kW motors, so that'd add up to a total of 1000kW, but Wikipedia lists 1500kW for some reason.

Angel have it as 4x250kW motors per motored car, which would make it 2000kW total for a unit.

The inverters are slightly on the small size so can't actually supply 2000kW in total hence the various 1500-1630kW numbers* circulating for Desiro family units, the 3rd rail units have additional software slugging in addition to the inverter size issue. Each inverter unit controls all 4 motors on each motor car.

*I did have the actual numbers at some point but no idea where I filed the stuff.

And 350407 is also now in the new livery meaning just 350405 is outstanding in the now defunct dynamic squiggle livery. 405 was on the 2000 Manchester Airport-Edinburgh tonight so it will most probably be out and about over the weekend when 350 useage is at the most.

I've been running in parallel with the 07:30 from Manchester Airport to Edinburgh this week and it's been a repainted/reliveried 350 each day so I'd say that most if not all are in new livery now.

And 405 is now in the new Livery at a Ardwick depot, so all 350/4s have been completed.

Given that they were only delivered 3-4 years ago, is that a contender for the shortest livery-wearing on a UK train?

Midland Mainline on 43162. Must have been just a few weeks at most before it moved to FGW and was repainted.
