Transpennine Cancellations

I'm sure there was an ongoing thread regarding TPE cancellations but I can't seem to find it now so apologies for starting a new one!

I know that TPE were cancelling quite a lot of services in the not to distant past but things seem to have gone quiet, have TPE sorted out their ongoing issues?

Also, when they do cancel services due to lack of train crewe, how early do they usually cancel them, will they show in RTT as cancelled a few hours before it's scheduled to run or is it generally a last minute thing?

Reason I ask is I'm planning a trip to Scarborough to do the Yorkshire coast line in October which will involve TPE for the return to York, connecting onto XC back to the Midlands, I've built in a bit of redundancy into my plan, ideally I'll be getting the 18:48 back into York but I'll keep an eye one it during the day and get the 17:48 if it's cancelled...

You should be fine with the Scarborough service, as its mostly just a shuttle to/from York, its isolated from the rest of the network so isn't impacted by cancellations across the Pennines (apart from crew bring delayed). The York-Scarborough service is reliable in my opinion.

TPE seems to have cleared a chunk of driver training, and helped by the Nova 3s being removed (meaning more drivers can driver services that would've been operated by the Nova 3, but are now operated by the 185).

In my experience, Castlefield has been a big source of delay when crossing the Pennines, whether its with TPE or Northern but that won't impact Scarborough services at the moment (until December timetable change).

It's lot calmer now and they are getting through the training backlog. You can use the journey check website which is usually updated around 22:00 with the planned alterations for the following day.

Overall much reduced and then it's most likely due to last minute sickness or disruption to the service. Sunday isn't part of the working week for Guards and there is currently just 1 full cancellation on Journey check for today due to no Guard.

I live alongside the CLC route via Warrington Central and watch and monitor the trains that pass. On the South TPEx route there are regular cancellations but they are nearly always because of disruption, such as last week (27th August) when the Westbound Hope Valley was blocked by a boken down train for 4 hours! Sometimes as a result of disruption late running South TPEx services are diverted via Chat Moss to make up some time meaning they are effectively cancelled where Warrington and Widnes are concerned!

Generally speaking, the South TPE route has been running quite well recently. However....

The example you gave above wasn't helped by a points failure at Swinton, at near enough the same time. Another thing to remember is that TPE are very quick to cancel services East of Sheffield to aid 'service recovery' and 'minimise disruption' even if the can still get to Doncaster, Scunthorpe or Grimsby.

The Saltburn service has greatly improved since the changeover, 6 car trains whenever I use them, few cancellations.

Most the issues seem to be West of York and they’re still hiding behind “a short notice change to the timetable”

The flower displays outside the buffet were always an impressive sight too!

Sorry I wouldn’t know as not one of my routes or a town that I would have much desire to visit.
