Hi, a couple of mates and myself are considering a day out visiting the various nice real ale pubs along the Manchester-Stalybridge-York line.

The problem of course is how to do it reasonably cheaply (the trains, not the beer ).
We don't want to fall victim to some arcane breaking of journey rule!

So, hoping you can help, here are the details-

3 or 4 adults,
leaving Newcastle around 08.00 travelling down to Manchester,
then returning calling off for beers at Stalybridge, Marsden, Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Leeds and York.
Should be on a Saturday, using flexible tickets so that we can 'go with the flow' on the day.

The LDS-MAN CDR should be further split at HUD, given you are stopping at HUD anyway. And even if you don't, all trains on that line stop at HUD en-route between LDS and MAN. Haven't been in Yorkshire for a while, you may also want to check out the Northern Duo deal to see if it is applicable to part of your route as you're travelling in a group. It works out as a 25% discount with one ticket half-price for every full-price ticket.

Also a Halifax-York CDR (£12.30) is valid via Huddersfield (see Routeing Guide) however it is debatable whether you can leave the station premises (not a problem if visiting the Head of Steam though! )

Last time we had a pub meet there, 5 people from York, 2 got tickets to Halifax, and 3 drove to Garforth. No-one got ripped off by the York - Hudds unfair fare.

As for break of journey, it's only an issue really on the outward portion of some (super) off peak (NOT day) tickets. This issue has become more complex thanks to 'simplification'.

A Newcastle to 'Lancaster Group' permitted route is map NC+MH+TP, which allows you to go via Manchester Picadilly. This isn't a routeing guide fail either - it's often the quickest and/or only feasible route.

So an anytime return to Morecambe or Bare Lane, for example, is £42.30. That's a little more expensive (The Newcastle>York + Halifax to York option comes to £35.90) but definitely allows break of journeys in both directions, so you could go for it if you want more flexibility.

I'm sure this could be done for £34 if get a return to Middlesbrough. From there buy a return to Carlisle, £23 and valid via Manchester..

You need to man up a bit fella and include Batley, Mirfield, Slaithwaite(2) Greenfield and Mossley.

Anyone done Ulleskelf, Church Fenton, Micklefield, Garforth x2 and Cross Gates pubs yet as well? Probably best to do over two days...
