By far the majority of passengers along Oxford Road go to the Uni and MRI, so why not terminate a tram route at the hospital? Some of the trams into Manchester from the Deansgate side could go as far as St Peters Square and then go along Oxford Road without having to clog up the two city crossing routes. (PS in my day at he uni in the 1960s we always walked because we couldn't afford the bus fares, but nowadays the buses are full of students).

Because you'd still need the buses. Part of the aim must surely be no motorised traffic on the road - trams and cycles only.

Because the main part of the campus is still over a kilometre north of that?
The only sensible place to terminate short would be the All Saints park, which would put it in the middle of the Man Met Campus.

I think the suggestion is that it would start in the city centre and terminate at the hospitals.

But the vast majority of traffic on the Oxford Road corridor is between the Unis and the Fallowfield area - and this is becoming more and more true as halls of residence closer to the city centre are redeveloped.
There is a huge daytime demand between Fallowfield and the Uni after all.

I think there is still a case for having a line down Oxford Road as far as the MRI, at least as a temporary terminus until further extensions are built.

If it was down to me, I would have a line that turns left after St. Peter’s Sq down Oxford Road to the MRI, and a line that splits off at Albert Sq to go down John Dalton Street towards Salford Central than Salford Crescent. Given that there are plans (I believe) to enable trans from Media City to enter the city centre via Salford Crescent, it would give an option for a service from Media City to the University and MRI and from Salford Uni to Manchester Uni & MRI.

I would then look at scoping extensions south towards Fallowfield, Levenshulme, Walley Range & Moss Side etc.

There is a student System One pass and has been for years, but students mostly don't have them.
From personal experience it’s because it’s something like £500 for the year and the stagecoach pass is about £200, and can be part/fully subsided by student bursaries
