Trams in Brussels

Off to Brussels next week and will need to use the trams whilst there.

I understand that at tram stops without a ticket machine you board the tram, purchase from someone (the driver?) and then validate your ticket in the machine. Is that correct?

You can buy a single on board (for a premium). You need to validate either a single or indeed a multi-Jump.

You would be better off with a 10 Jump ticket (valid for 10 single trips, discounted) or a period ticket dependent upon how much travelling you are doing. The 10 Jump ticket offers 10 trips (metro, tram, bus and SNCB the latter in central Brussels only) each of 60 mins from validation and includes transits (ie swapping from one vehicle or mode to another).

Word of warning - ticket machines in Brussels don't accept notes, only coins and cards.

Yes, from driver if no machine, exact cash not needed, but a grump can be expected. ALL tickets are valid for 60 mins incl all changes, incl trains in BRU area, and ride can be finished if validated correctly, car nr is printed on them for easy checks. Thus you must validate every time you board. Area EXcludes airport!!
There are also 5ridetickets and singles are cheaper from machine as from driver.

not really as by only using coins/cards you can actually keep a better float in the machine rather than having to go empty/refill it every other day. Will also lead to less vandalism as well as the big money wont be in there just a load of coins.

I can't believe that many people would be stupid enough to go to Brussels with the intention of using public transport without having a few coins in their pocket/purse.

Check out - if you can - the Tram Museum -which does heritage runs at weekends - good value. (and a good suburban insight into Bruxelles) - not that I really commend the place to be honest...
