Tram driver assessment

I have recently applied for a tram driver role with Midland Metro and been invited to attend an assessment, however the HR have sent no practice material. Wanted to ask if anyone knew what kind of assessments to expect?

The role also involves some customer service (ticket checking and selling) which i am comfortable with coming from a similar role on the railway, so kinda know what assessments will be related to this.

HR said to me that we didn’t need to practice and to just turn up On day and do it. She said there is a concentration test and other driver specific assessments. Did she mention salary to you? I hate asking about money as it always comes across wrong.

I would prefer if they did send some practice material to at least get an idea of what to expect
Salary wise she said 18k which is a bit low but i guess with overtime you could earn 20-25k. I hope this job will provide good experience for train driver jobs in future.
Have you applied to any other rail jobs?

I believe that’s the training salary and it goes up after fully qualified but I will ask that on day as it’s quite a drop for me. But Midland Metro are expanding massively over next 5-10 years so wages will go up.

I thought it was 18k training then rises after passing out but she just said 18k flat didn’t mention anything about it rising. Not sure if i misunderstood or she didn’t make it clear worth asking on the day just to be sure.
Your right about Midland metro expanding so it may be good to get in now.

I applied for a Tram Driver position about 5years ago. The assessment from what I remember was a mental arithmetic test for ticket checking/selling and a concentration test but I can't quite remember how this played out.
The salary at the time was £16.5k training raising to £17k when qualified. Bank holiday payments where £10 per bank holiday worked on top of your normal daily rate of pay. Overtime was available to cover open turns etc.
I had to turn the position down as I couldn't take a massive drop in salary.
With the investment going into the tram network over the next 10-15 years and with it running coming under the Mayor I'd hope that the salary may rise to what other tram networks pay.

Thanks for that info, salary is 18k from what it said on the advert, not sure how much that goes up by (if it even does) after training. Have to see what they tell us on the assessment day

Did you get a phone call today with your assessment results? Got my interview this Thursday. Best get revising.

Pay wise I asked the question.

Training wage: £17,900
After training: £18,100
After probation (6months - 1 year): £18,900
Level 1: £19,100 (another year)
Level 2: £19,900

Plus add overtime which I take could potentially take it to the £22-24k mark but that’s just a guess. I don’t know if it’s more for Sunday’s!

I got a call but sadly failed the concentration part. I applied for the CSR role too which I originally withdrew but she said as I did well on the other part of the test she can reinstate that application, so I have an assessment for that role tomorrow. That’s just ticket checking and cash handling tests she said.

Sounds like the CSR role will be about 18k after training & probation and then 20-22k with overtime.

Remember to ask for feedback and get you results and ask how far off you were to making the grade.
