I've been looking over these for a while but am getting confused as to what would be best for a complete beginner. Trainz 2012 is just over £6 on steam and TS2013 is just over £17 on steam, any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

For a complete beginner, I would go with Trainz 2012. Mainly because it is quite easy to understand how to route build and driving controls have a beginner setting. TS2013 is Railworks IIRC and I believe that has quite a big learning curve in comparisson. I am of course biased toward Trainz 2012 because that's the one I have.

I don't think the learning curve on TS2013 is particularly steep in fact I'd say driving most locos and units is really simple!

Like Ainsworth has said, its fairly simple. However, you cannot really compare the two like for like.

I wouldn't say building a route in railworks is particularly easy. I tried it a couple of weeks back and thought no, I'll stick to making routes in trainz. That said, it is easy to drive trainz on both simulators, with both also having basic and complex controls for you to choose.

I would agree there, that it is quite to compare them now, but as a user of both, I would say it depends on what you are most interested in. If you want a more realistic driving experience, then probably train simulator 2013 but if you are more creating and like building routes etc, then IMO, trainz 2012 is your best choice. Also, if money is a factor in the long run, then I'd go for trainz as you get access to thousands of free content and there is only a small amount of payware. Personally I would go for trainz (TS12) as I prefer the overall layout and ease of use - it is very easy to create your own content and reskins (after all I spend about 85% time on trainz and 15% on railworks.

Having used both of them, I would say it depends what you want. If you want to drive then I would choose Train Simulator. The learning curve, particularly if you start in 'simple' control mode really isn't too steep.

If however you prefer the building/scenario creation aspect I would go with Trainz as I personally, and I'm sure many others find the 'Surveyor' module of Trainz far easier to use than Train Simulators' world editor.

It really depends on what you want to get out of your sim.

Joe :)

I started with trainz and it took me a very long time and a lot of practice to get to understand the route builder of (what it was then) railworks 2. Ts2013 has a massive jump in realism and is (IMO) a lot better than Trainz. Also I cant play trainz anymore because the controls are different and after a year and a half away from it, it's safe to say I will be rusty

Last sim I played was the original MSTS, really enjoyed the realism and being able to run trains from around the world, particularly from the large free online libraries. Would people recommend Trainz or TS2013 and is there likely to be a 2013 Trainz coming out any time soon?
