Trainsplit help!

Hi guys,

I'm requiring a bit of assistance with the trainsplit website and more specifically the extra time at 'go via' stations in the advanced options. I want to do a journey from Stafford to Reading with a layover at Moor Street but when I put in 90 extra minutes at Moor Street it is also automatically generating a 90 minutes layover at Banbury which I don't want to do.

Could someone kindly advise me as to which fields I should have completed to generate the correct results please?

I'm no expert on Trainsplit, but I got it to display a longer layover at Moor Street, but not only adding the extra change time into the via box, but also adding the same 90 mins into the general extra time box on the lower right of the advanced options. Not sure if both is redundant, or just the lower right is required.

EDIT: This seems to add the 90 mins onto a Banbury connection also...although if you are splitting, the only reservable portion seems to be from Birmingham to Reading, splitting at Banbury

Yeah that's what was happening with me @bigfoote and if I didn't enter in both of the boxes you mention it wouldn't create a layover at Moor Street.

I never actually checked what type of tickets this split was allocating to me. If it was to be anything other than an advance to cover the Banbury-Reading portion of the journey I guess I'd be able to pick any train (within the restrictions of the ticket of course) anyway. It would be a greater problem if it's an advance as I'd be stuck at Banbury for over 2 hours and I don't particularly want to do that

All I can advise as a total amateur, is to book the split separately (I know this is a pain as Trainsplit usually does it all for you). I found out the splits by carrying on the process one more step to see the details of travel. Thinking aloud, perhaps book both halves (Stafford to Moor Street, and Moor Street onwards) separately, allowing you to dictate the advance timings. I believe this would all be covered under NRCoT as a single journey, even if booked separately.

You don't even have to buy the journeys as one transaction for it to qualify under NRCoT 14.1. All that matters is that the tickets can be valididly used together (i.e. on ordinary walk-up tickets you stop at each splitting station) and, if you want Advance/Delay Repay protection as with a through ticket, you leave the minimum connection time when changing.

If you want to level a criticism at train split is that it comes at it from the angle you want to have the cheapest journey possible. Not that you may want a three hour break mid journey at a certain point.

Sometimes you just have to do things separately as suggested.

I don't mind doing it separately if that's the best way to do it in this case, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't me doing something wrong with the data I was inputting.

There is a problem with the extra time function at the moment. Nick is aware.

In the meantime, add each element of your journey to the basket separately. You can still pay for it all as one transaction.

That explains it then, thanks for letting me know and for the alternate way of doing it for now

Actually it does cater for that (when it works); the "fastest" button will eliminate trains that are the "cheapest possible" if they are not the fastest, so it's not just about making it cheaper.

The only caveat is that the maximum additional layover time for any station is 99 minutes, but that is added to minimum interchange times.

So to cross Birmingham with a very long break you could specify up to 99 mins at both BHM and BMO, which would give well over 3 hours to cross Birmingham.

That's quite interesting to read as I'd not thought of that as a way to increase my layover time in Birmingham. My current plan is to spend at least 2 hours at Moor Street so to achieve this I would need to specify a 30 minutes layover at New Street and a 90 minutes layover at Moor Street (when the function is operational again) and that will give me the time required (and a bit more) at Moor Street?
