We're pleased to announce an upgrade to our advance split fare finder at TrainSplit. We've fixed some issues and made some improvements.

Remember that we also have an advanced mode that allows you to specify stopping at AND avoiding, as well as minimum interchange times.

Been playing around and it's finding some pretty impressive savings using split advances. One question, will it make your seat reservations the same for each advance or are you going to have a different seat reserved with each advance?

It will try, but it doesn't always succeed. The problem is that some TOCs implement staggered reservations for different origin and destinations. So the NRS might not suggest the same seat throughout, but move you around according to the origin/destination on the ticket.

I accept that this is a drawback to split advances, but the savings are impressive, so it's often worth being messed around.

In reality, of course, you could just take an unreserved seat somewhere. It's not likely that you'll be asked to move, but that's a different discussion!

A bit concerning, I have found a case of TrainSplit offering a more expensive split than a through ticket. The split fares are £75.70 with a claimed saving of £63.20, whereas the through ticket is just £63.00. I will PM details so that you can look into it.

This is a problem with the ticket restriction coding. It's coded to disallow journeys that should be allowed by the "Network Area Rule" - see this post (not the journey in question, but a good example).

The data says that the Off-Peak return isn't valid at this time.

Booking engines have to use the data they're given and can't override such things. So it's a data quality issue and complaints need to be made to the relevant TOCs. In the meantime, people are being overcharged.
