If memory serves, maximum journey time is laid down at an hour, except in emergencies.

Railway myth?

I don't think anyone has yet mentioned SWT's Guildford via Cobham stoppers, which have been run with 455s for years, taking around 75 minutes.

Well it obviously isn't an international standard. I was on a coach for 15 hours in Bolivia with no toilet. On parts of the route if you tried to step off the coach for a wee you would have fallen off a cliff. Ha ha. (It did have a few comfort breaks along the way so I am being slightly unfair, ha ha, still the bus journey from hell though).

Well I am not young - 58 actually - but on my occasional day trips to Grimsby, I use the toilet before leaving home for the brief walk to Harlesden Station
Harlesden-Euston-King's Cross-Newark/Doncaster-Grimsby Town
and I have no need of a toilet between leaving home and arriving at GrimsbyTown and using the facility on the station

The rules on journey times and toilets all come down to it seems if refreshments are available on the train and even with those it was around the one hour mark. We as staff looked into the rules when we were told that we were running 313's from Brighton to Portsmouth. There were even rumours about running them to Littlehampton, then changing the headcode so it would be within the rules, but then the no trolley, no lav rules was spotted. Another way of getting round it is of course to announce that there are no toilets in advance on the CIS. Thus if you dont say so, and a train with no lavs turns up, or a train with duff lavs, then you have to do toilet breaks.

What are the rules regarding a train with toilets OOU then? I would hate to get on a train for a long journey only to find the toilets weren't working. Do toilet breaks have to be provided if possible? London Victoria to Southampton Central, for example, would be a long time to go without a toilet if you were to be expecting them on the train. How reliable are the 377's toilets?

I wonder how often people get caught out (or rather, caught short) when leaving a London terminus that charges 30p to use the toilet, with the intention of going on the train, only to find the that 455/456/313/315/376/378depending upon which terminus you are at doesn't have a toilet on board?

I got on a 319 at Sutton once, decided to go to the toilet on the train only to find both toilets locked out of use. It was a painful 40 minute journey to City Thameslink then 10 minute walk from there to my work at the time.

If its an emergency I've done toilet stops before at places like Worthing. When trains get delayed due to this it sure does focus the mind on those in charge to get the toilets working.

Main reasons for the lavs not working on a 377:
Water tank empty (can be filled again at certain stations)
Collecting tank full.
Missuse. (someones perhaps has been a bit ill, or decided to try and flush a nappy.).
Leaky pipe
Door fault.

or even sometimes:
Someone without a ticket who locks themselves in.

The Guildford via Cobhams are only just over an hour. The via Epsoms are about 70 minutes, but people are unlikely to be going the whole distance on those. The longest people are likely to go on the via Cobhams are London Road, Clandon, Horsley or Effingham, all of which have toilets, but unfortunately only whilst the ticket offices are open in the morning. I'm not sure about the situation at other stations, but I imagine most have toilets. Once you're at Surbiton you could always change to a train with a toilet too, and once at Wimbledon the trains are very frequent if you need to pop off to the loo.
