What would be the easiest way to get from either East Croydon or Bromley South to Gravesend by 0800 on a weekday morning?

Maybe go to St Pancras and then HS1? Does that have 1st class?

This is the type of query which the booking engines are very good at answering. Try eastcoast.co.uk.

It shows that from East Croydon the last departure which arrives before 0800 tomorrow morning is:
0639 East Croydon - London Bridge 0655
0705 London Bridge - Gravesend 0758
and a single is £13.10 Standard or £16.60 First Class.

From Bromley South the last departure which arrives before 0800 tomorrow morning is:
0639 Bromley South - Rochester 0714
0718 Rochester - Gravesend 0737
and a single is £11.20 Standard or £16.50 First Class.
Maybe go to St Pancras and then HS1?
To test this route on eastcoast.co.uk, click more options and enter via London St Pancras. This shows that no fares are available from Bromley South, indicating that this is not a permitted route on a through ticket.

From East Croydon the last departure which arrives before 0800 tomorrow morning is:
0632 East Croydon - London St Pancras 0701
0722 London St Pancras - Gravesend 0748
and a single is £13.10 Standard. There are two £13.10 East Croydon - Gravesend singles: one is routed "+ Not Valid on HS1" and the other is routed "+ Any Permitted". Make sure you get a ticket routed "+ Any Permitted". If I were undertaking this journey, I would book online, print out the itinerary showing the route via HS1 and carry that on my journey.

Does that have 1st class?
HS1 does not have First Class.

I would also like to let you know that there is pretty much no reason at all to visit Gravesend.

A journey like Bromley to Gravesend might be best done partly by bus/coach, I'd have thought - it's not so far. Travelinesoutheast more or less confirms this, making the follwing suggestions

0703 Bromley Town Centre (Widmore Road by town Hall) TfL Bus 314
0720 New Eltham Station

0726 New Eltham Southeastern Train
0758 Gravesend

That will almost certainly be much cheaper, although you have to hope the bus runs properly (and that you can get a ticket without waiting at New Eltham)... (Some of the other suggested routes involve getting the train from Bromley South to Meopham, then another bus, but this would be both more expensive and if you miss the bus there might be a long wait for the next one)

Doesn't really work for Croydon though - just that little bit further away.

Or what he could do with the first route, is go from New Eltham if he's got a travelcard ( Oyster ) To Zone 6 and then when he gets to Gravesend add the Boundary from zone 6 to Gravesend as New Eltham is Zone 4

You can't get an Oyster Extension Permit to travel outside of the zones in anycase. They are for people who hold a period travelcard on their oyster and want to travel to somewhere (on a journey that involves travel on NR) in a zone that the travelcard doesn't cover.
