Trains that cross their own path

Here's an odd working. On Monday, the 06.01 from Sheffield to Bournemouth (which would normally start at Nottingham but for bank-holiday-related shenanigans) is diverted via Soho and Aston due to engineering works east of New Street. Which means that the train crosses its own path here at Washwood Heath, passing first under then over that bridge.

Are there many other examples of services doing this? Apart from the TWM Yellow line, I've already thought of that

They don't cross themselves. (They cross the mainline, but being as they didn't start on the mainline that's irrelevant.)

Technically, only trains heading west to east at Hampden Park (and south to west at Dore, previous post) cross their path

It could also happen at Liverpool LS (Wigan-LS Parkway service) and Manchester P (TPE Airport workings).

The nearest to the Washwood Heath original would be Newcastle, where a Hexham-Middlesborough could certainly be routed via HL Bridge then KE Bridge, describing a complete circle, or in and out of Central by the same bridge.
I've certainly been in from Blaydon or Wylam the "wrong" way - without research can't say if it happens regularly.

Not quite. Dore & Totley station is only on the Hope Valley Line (it only has one platform), not the Midland Main Line, so these services only pass through once each. Dore is visible from the MML though.

There used to be a London bridge-Victoria via Wimbledon service. I'm not sure exactly which route it went but I know it went through the Wellington line so it may well have crossed its own path at Stretham on the Portsmouth crossing the Brighton?

They don't cross their own path really thou do they? Just run on the same route in the opposite direction, but its not really any different from a train terminating somewhere and then going back to where it came from.

True, But I can remember four platforms being intact. Although the MML platforms hadn't been used for many years before they were actually demolished. I believe a second platform is to be re-instated as part of the Northern Hub project. I think that as the hourly NR Leeds-Nottingham semi-fast stops at Dronfield [which previously only had an handful of trains a day], adding Dore as a stop could be justified. Providing of course provision for MML trains to stop is also re-instated. Is this included in the Northern Hub project? Furthermore, it was reported here in Sheffield that the coming of HS2 and the projected cost includes a Supertram extension running alongside the MML between Sheffield & Dore. This will have been planned for already. Whether it actually happens we have to wait and see.

If we are discounting straight reversal over the same bit of track (e.g. Middlesbrough - Whitby at Battersby) and actually talking about crossing over (on a different line) then the Scunthorpe - Lincoln services heading out of Sheffield Midland cross over the track that they previously ran over.

Am I right in thinking that GC West Riding services will have done so on diversion at some point? Reversal at Wakey Kirkgate, then again at Westgate, and over the viaduct that crosses the L&Y?

I can remember reading in one of the rail magazines some years ago about an incredible route had been planned due to engineering work. It was probably a freight and it involved passing through Retford twice, on the low level then on the high level.

I can't remember the exact details and I've often wondered what it was. Can anyone else remember this?

An EMT going Norwich or Nottingham to Liverpool DOES cross track it travelled on earlier. But NOT in the opposite direction.

The full route was London Bridge, South Bermondsey, Peckham Rye, East Dulwich, Tulse Hill, Streatham, Streatham Junction, Streatham Junction South, Tooting, Wimbledon, West Sutton, Sutton, Waddon, West Croydon, Selhurst, Streatham Common Junction, Streatham Junction North, Balham, Clapham Junction, Battersea Park, Victoria.

Bold type indicates the bridge where it first crossed over, then under (almost an hour later).

That's going back to days before FCC ran all day on the Wimbledon/Sutton loop! On a Saturday it used to turn up with Central Division 319s but seemed to have random stovk ondays to Fridays

The same thing will happen on June 1st to the 1744 Llandudno-Manchester Airport diverted via the Mid Cheshire line.

It must be frustrating for passengers to go around the southern, eastern and northern boundaries of the airport before being allowed to alight!

The Norwich - Liverpool services I think cross their own path at Ely. It's easy to to film one at the East crossing at Queen Adelaide to the north of the city when its going into Ely then walk the short distance across to the West crossing to film it going along The Fens line. Correct me if that doesn't count.
