Trains running from Kings Cross today?

Just out of curiosity I was checking a few busy stations to see if there are any trains running. It struck me as rather odd that the only one (other than paddington's Heathrow Express) running trains is Kings Cross, with several east coast services departing, and even a Grand Central.

Weird.

Just checked and there are about 20 trains into kings Cross today, but they are all overdue from the starting point :roll:, somebody forget to remove them but why remove all the others and not these.

No there by error.

Only trains out with passengers are Pad & Vic (Airport services) nothing else

All these trains (and every other ordinary one) are showing as overdue from the originating station, IE THEY ARE NOT RUNNING.

The only "trains" running are to Gatwick & Heathrow.

Gatwick Express are running rail replacement buses ALL DAY today, first ones at 0630, last one from VIC at 1645 and GTW at 1630, and Heathrow Express are going over to buses from 1400, some RAIL service .

According to the NR Live Departures there are NO Services from Kings Cross, only Heathrow & Gatwick (as said above) services are running... although Gatwick is a replacement bus. Aha!

CrossCountry last year had a full service showing on Boxing Day according to the TSDB which feeds all of these LDB systems!

South Eastern are running hourly from Victoria- Slade Green, Orpington, Ashford and Gillingham
From London Bridge half hourly- East Croydon via Norbury and East Croydon via Forest Hill.
Gatwick Express half hourly.

Gatwick Express diverted via Wandsworth Road, Tulse Hill and Streatham before joining normal line of route at Streatham Common and additionally stopping at East Croydon.

Yesterday, (Christmas Day) there was a goods train went down the Chinley North Junction - New Mills South Junction line about 3.15pm. It wasn't ICI hoppers, which is usually the first train to run after Xmas day closure, but (I think) an engineers train. I missed what was hauling it, and only saw the last few flat wagons.

Anyone know what this would have been?

There were two trains from Earles Sidings to Crewe Basford Hall that ran within an hour of each other around that time yesterday; sorry, can't help with what was on them.

Must admit that I am surprised that they had all the signalboxes down there open

It should come as no surprise that loco hauled were running Xmas Day, engineering etc, as for signal boxes,why are you surprised they were open,I knew a signalman who worked Ellesmere Port box about ten years ago,he told me Xmas Day was a working day, when the last train had left his section,he reported to Control, who told him to finish shift or go home.

Christmas Day is definitely not a normal working day, we get paid at a special rate if working - more than the usual overtime rate. Because of this, Network Rail (and its predecessors) usually like to have as few boxes open as possible, with the bare minimum of staff. Major Signalling centres and PSBs are normally manned with a skelton staff for security purposes though, these days, they are often required to be open for major engineering work. In the case of the trains mentioned I am not surprised that they ran, more that they stabled them somewhere that required a number of smaller boxes to be open rather than in a location that could be accessed directly from a PSB or similar.

What your mate at Ellesmere Port is probably referring to is Christmas Eve, which is a normal working day; therefore anybody on nights would be booked to the end of their shift on Christmas Day (usually 0600 or 0700) - in practise they would probably close in the early hours after the last train has been dealt with. Most places would normally re-open for the night shift on the 26th.

Now I do recall him, saying that he was booked onto 0600 Xmas Day, & was
told to go home after some train left Stranlow refinery , if my memory recalls,

We used to have many a laugh, when we met up,I used to be in the Rail newspaper delivery trade
and we both knew a person (Brummie) Called the black prince, a Driver who was
either based at Juncton or Chester, Prince also drove a motor bike, one Sunday he thundered through Flint at 2100 on a class 40 to Holyhead forgetting to stop, this was a Sunday only stop,the rest is history.
