What a waste that whole Class 460 -> Class 458 conversion was...

It was hardly a waste. It has provided invaluable capacity on the Reading side Metro routes for eight years, particularly prior to 707 introduction, and SWR will certainly be grateful for the additional five **working** ex 460 units now.

156405/406/408/410/411 are also not spoken for.
Really? So despite the collapse in commuting into London, GA and c2c still need all their 720s. Sorry, I don't believe that.
Unlikely, as Porerbrook have said they would hold on to the eight surplus units (529-536) for some time, should SWR need them. More likely is that the Pompey line conversion gets under way and the ex-460 cars from those units start to go in the bin.

(156s) I do find this odd, as an enlargened common fleet of 156s based at Newton Heath using the remaining EMR ones could in theory send off the last few NH based 150/2s to Yorkshire to replace the microfleet of 155s. There will be a reason, of course, I just wonder what it is.

(720s) Aren’t you one of the forumers (rightfully) advocating for things going back to normal? Inevitably, they will do eventually, even if it does take several years, and the capacity should be needed then. The capital city must not continue to rely on five carriage formations.

(458s) The six DanNCL mentioned are all ex-460 cars in their entirety. It does make sense to hold onto former 458029/8030 though in case those two are required alongside their identical, luckier-fortuned siblings.

455 & 456 I should think.
According to a very well-informed and reliable forum member who regularly gives invaluable updates on the SWR Metro thread, the plan is that 456s will remain in storage for a year before scrapping so technically they’re perhaps safe from the scrapman (JUST) for 2022.

I am advocating the removal of restrictions. That does not necessarily translate into everyone going back to working in the office 5 days-per-week. Given that many have done near on 2 years of working from home and likely realised the financial, time and quality of life cost of sitting/standing on the train to work, I cannot see demand going back to what it was any time soon.

I'm well aware of the formation of the 458s, thanks - I used them daily until the pandemic started. The point I was making is that Porterbrook have said they will retain and store all the eight surplus sets (529-536) for a period, should SWR need them.

When the numbers were posted on here, it isn't just 156470/73/97/98 of the EMR 156s that aren't going to Northern. A few of the lower numbered ones aren't included either.
Noted 156470 today displaying corrosion around drivers window. Not unusual in units of this age, but if there's more it might be marked for earlier withdawal rather than refurbishing or moving on? Not too soon though, EMR need as many units as they can get.

Most likely perfectly functioning EMUs instead of worn out DMUs. Becuase god forbid we electrify more of the network....
