I normally go out for the day on Saturday / Sunday from York on the train with the dog. I like to go to places where he can have a good run off the lead when we get to wherever we get to if possible.
Examples of places I've been recently are:
Out to Sowerby Bridge, walk to Hedben Bridge along canal, & rtn from there
Out to Commondale, walk to Danby across moor, and rtn from there
Out to and rtn from Church Fenton with circular walk across fields

I can afford to spend up to £15 on a return train ticket from York, no railcards. Does anyone have any suggestions of other places to go?

The Whitby-Scarborough trail is great, and a ticket from York (or even Cattal or Sherburn) is only £11.10 avoiding Darlington. You could walk part way and get a bus back? There is a fairly regular bus service but apparently they're always late. Not sure on cost of the bus but the total should be under £15.

You could also walk along the Leeds-Liverpool canal from somewhere like Keighley to Shipley. (York-Keighley is £15)

in the same vein - Saltburn for £10.40 (not via Darlington)
You could then walk back along the beach or take the path, and pick up the train in Marske or Redcar.

Thanks tony mac, tried train to Saltburn on Saturday and walked to Redcar and took train back from there. Good day out. Will try one of the other suggestions next week. Thanks for all the suggestions.
