With our knees up to your chin plank like seats, small windows, no front view anymore and noisy engjnes I can't help thinking we have a very long way to go to catch up.

Rotating seats are commonplace in Japan, the Narita airport express has them from the main airport to Tokyo. The Japanese rail system is amazing I've had the pleasure of travelling on the Shinkansen, Tokyo's urban network as well as some local trains.

I've often wondered whether tram-style 'reversible' seats (as used to be on Blackpool's Balloon cars) would work on DMUs such as pacers. Being low-backed though I'd guess that ship has sailed now.

In many ways this does make us look dated, though I will say that from a passing view that hybrid unit didn't look dissimilar to a 156 or 158. Did anyone else also notice that every shot of the hybrid train showed it operating under an overhead line?!

I also liked the preserved railbus - I'm imagining a load of rail enthusiasts flocking for a small ride on a Pacer!

Looking at the above video the DMU appears to be making its entire journey under the wires bit like Birmingham to Glasgow on a Voyager

I think before we start on rotating seats, we ought to think about getting the padding and leg room right.
