hi all

I’m due to start driver training for GWR in Newton Abbott I believe in January (if my medical comes back ok!) can anyone let me know what the training programme is like? First few weeks etc? Do they put you up at Swindon if so where? And as I’ve not had a contract yet or anything can someone tell me what the salary is and the increment dates please?? If your depot location is over 90 mins away from the training location you’ll be given accommodation local to the training facility.

The training salary is £28,267 and it’ll be that amount until you qualify, at which point it goes up to 80% of the full salary for the first year, then 90% for the second until the third, when it’s 100%. By the time you qualify you’ll be on 80% of £62k ish though so it’s still a decent amount. The training salary is a decent amount, although you will be on it for about a year give or take (other TOCs do have increases throughout training, but their salaries tend to start lower). I was in a hotel (although my training was in Bristol) and claimed for travelling time to/from on a Sunday and Friday where applicable, which meant the salary was a bit better looking.

Training itself is around 16-19 weeks and put simply, it’ll be about 12 weeks rules and 4 weeks traction.

That’s a great help, it’s exciting times if my medical report gets done in time! It’s been three weeks already and I’ve only got a week till I have to hand my notice in...

No, I’m based in Fratton, which is why I got accommodation.
