Training Overtime

Hi,

I’m starting a Guard course soon- the training salary will be set for 12 months depending on probation period etc, but does anybody know whether I’ll be working RDW etc during this period?

My question really is will I be able to boost those earnings during the training stage?

Simple answer nope. Flat rate only!

They won’t pay someone overtime if you’re not qualified and passed out for the position.

Depending on the TOC, you might be working some Sundays at an enhanced rate, but I wouldn't rely on it.

12 months is a long time for a guard to be in training. When I started as a guard I was on a fixed term training salary but passed our during that time and worked Sundays and could have worked RDW if I'd wanted to. Many of the guards who were on courses after me did as much RDW as they could while still on training rate to make up their salary to something more like the normal wage.

I would hazard a guess that the set up will be similar where you are, no overtime during the actual training but once you pass out you should be able to do RDW the same as any other guard, even if still on a lower salary.

Some tocs like XC and West Midlands have training salary for 12 months, initial training is circa 3 months.

It’s for West Midlands Rail. I’ve been informed that training will be around 4-6 months if I can pick everything up fairly swiftly, and salary wise, the ‘full’ salary is only effective after the first aniversary of commencement of training so presumably I’ll be limited to RDW during the first few months, then between this and the end of year one I’ll be free to offer myself for working additional hours?

Basic training is 3 months, the remaining time is for route learning. Once you have learned, qualified and signed a route you can work over that route without having learned all the rest. So there's every chance that you can pick up some RDW before completing your full route card. When you complete your pass out from basic training would be a good time to have a chat with your manager about it.

First year is at training rate, it was part of the 3 yr 2012 (I think) pay deal to bring ex central and ex silverlink pay in line with each other.

Once your passed out you’ll get RDW etc, but itll be paid at the lower training rate.
