They tend not to be called Trainees these days, generally the term Apprentice is used. As far as I'm aware, there is still a big apprenticeship programme across the industry.

For Trainee Driver Roles:
Another thing to do is look at the Driver recruitment advice on the careers pages of the companies you are interested in applying for to learn about how they recruit for their drivers.
The reason for this is that some companies don't recruit for Trainee Train Drivers directly. Some have their own unique recruitment methods. For example, as EM2 mentioned above, Virgin Trains West Coast run apprenticeship schemes for their trainees, others will generally recruit for qualified drivers, and some require you to apply for an alternative role first. (In my case for example, East Midlands Trains recruit for Trainee Train Drivers directly from their pool of Depot Drivers, so for me, that's what I need to do first)
You have to be quick too, as some vacancies are only advertised for a day or two before being pulled due to high demand.
Other companies will recruit for Talent Pools, which means they'll do a mass recruitment drive for lots of potential drivers and use them to fill positions for a number of years.
The vacancies are out there, but you just need to look into how each individual company recruits, and check their vacancies DAILY.

Ah, I didn't realise that we were talking specifically about drivers.

I just assumed so with the term 'trainee'. In my experience, it tends to be linked to driver roles on this forum. Sorry if the OP wasn't referring to a potential driver role though.
Same principle applies though with any railway role, it's good practice to find out if a company recruits in a particular way for the role by checking their advice pages.

Considering that the OP has made a posting requesting details of a LOM in a signalling thread, I suspect he is asking about trainees in that field.
