Aplogies if already posted but Southern are advertising for Trainee Drivers at their Brighton depot. However, they do like to enforce a 30 minute commute policy but nothing ventured nothing gained if you live further away.

On the requirements Southern website it says OU that one of the mandatory requirements is Holder of a Personal Track Safety Card (PTS). Do you know if that means you need to have one already or that you will have to get one if successful?

Anyone know what the recruiment process is like? I applied in 2010 and was invited to an assessment centre, but was away and couldn't make and they were not able to offer an alternative date. Do they invite a lot of people to assessment?

If you are successful in passing the initial sift you will get an email with a practice pack explaining what to expect and practice papers based on similar (but not exact) tests that will be carried out on the day. There are usually ten to twenty applicants in the tests and after each test those who fail are no longer required to sit the remainder tests.

Southern also use the computer based GB test which is available on the forum to download and practice and you will have to practice!! The key to passing the GB is pace, accuracy and consistency. After that, if you are successful there will be a driver/line manager competency based interview. Once again, if you pass this you then have the final competency based interview and finally a medical.

The forum has lots of useful info on what type of tests and possible interview questions you will be asked so have a good look around previous posts. Vicpaul is also a good source of info as he is a driver with Southern.

Think it depends on the TOC. I know Northern do the managers interview first then send a few candidates to the assessments. Whereas some south eastern commuter TOC's (FGW, FCC etc) send a load of people to assessments and then select who they want for the managers interview from there.

Can't tell you what Southern do though sorry!

bit pants, can't save your application as you go and has to be done in one. looks like a job for the weekend unless I find time at work +on my break of course+ still I'm sure there will be thousands of applicants might not stand a chance though I do have a gb and trp and reactions pass under my belt.

When it comes to the GB tests, I have always believed that if you're not naturally good at concentration, no amount of practice will make you good at it. I didn't practice one second before I did the test yet past it with flying colours. You either have it in you or you don't.

ah pays to read the last 2 questions regarding external applicants

I've just applied for this after being rejected for the Conductor position... I have zero confidence in my ability to drive a train though!

Does anyone remember if there was a part on the application where you can tell them that you've passed all the tests already?

I don't remember a section like this but thought I'd ask anyways...!

Thanks
