Trainee Train Driver Books/Preparation

Hello all,

I have very recently applied to become a train driver with Southeastern. I have managed to pass the recruitment process and have now been invited to the assessment centre. I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions for specific books, online courses or recommendations to prepare the best way I can for the Assessment Centre and to prepare myself in the best way I can for the role as a train driver trainee overall.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

So I've been speaking with many drivers recently and most of them recommend the how2become material.
You can choose from many different packs. I believe it is worth to have a look at least.

Just do the practise material they send. Don’t go spending money on something that won’t guarantee you a pass. If you have the right ability and practise properly you will be fine. Although it is a frequent debate on here whether or not it does help, I’m under the impression it does not

Only extra thing I did was print off more of the dot bourdon to practise as that’s where most seem to fail.

Just be careful with the ‘How to become’ stuff. I paid for a document prior to an interview and didn’t realise I was signing up to a subscription and they started billing me each month until I realised and cancelled it. Very dubious tactics in my opinion as they don’t make it obvious.

But also, like above, wait for the practice material first and see how you get on with that. It’s designed to give you what you need for the assessment day.

Get a couple of group bourdon (dots test) of Amazon for about a tenner each. Practice these like made as the bourdon is what most people fail on.

Yes, that is all I used for my preparation and it definitely helped.

To be fair the only preparation needed is the group bourdon tool found here and the prep they send you as stated above. All the other prep stuff is excessive and the overload isn't useful in my opinion.

I passed the psychometric a few months ago, I practiced my dots for around 10 mins. I strongly believe you can either pass it or you can’t. I sat the full test included MMI on the same day it was very intense and mentally draining once finished. The only thing that caught me off guard was how fast the tones are when counting. Only advice I would give anyone is take your time have a drink of water and if you mess up forget about it and carry on. The MMI is designed to make you crack. If your a parent to toddlers you’ll be sound because everything you answer is followed by “why” and “how did that make you feel”

The only real difference is that the person conducting the MMI won't say

- "Can I have an ice cream?"
- "I need a drink!"
- "I'm hungry!"

Save your money and spend half a day reading through all the information on here for free. I also used newspapers to practice the group bourdon test, just circled particular letters instead of dots/shapes.

Hi, is it possible to write a simple explanation for each step for recruitment process of southeastern careers please. I tried checking on their website but it’s just the names of each stage that comes up.
