Trainee Driver Wages

Hi does anybody know if a TOC should drop your wages if you work as a Conductor but are promoted to Trainee driver ? My Friend works for a TOC who kept all internal staff at previous rates of pay when they got promoted for the duration of there training , but externals began on Trainee wages. He seems to think it is against the law to drop wages if you are internal and get a promotion. Has anybody any ideas ??

There were 3 conductors on my trainee drivers course. They kept their basic guards wage while we started on 4 1/2k less. The reason is that they are still guards although carry the title of trainee driver and if they were to drop out of the course for whatever reason they would go back to being guards. My mate lost quite a bit in lost commission and Sunday's etc even though he has been promoted and is now a driver. Hope this helps

It's not against the law because it is classed as a different job from what you are currently employed in as a Guard/Conductor, so the company are within their rights to drop your wages if you accept the new job but it does differ from company to company, I know that South West Trains do drop Guards/Conductors wages to training rate if the take on driving jobs.
