Mike, not already working in the rail industry could be holding you back. If you're armed forces or emergency services they love you too but otherwise it's very difficult to go from non-rail industry to trainee train driver. Not impossible but if you can get job with your local TOC you'll have a better chance of getting a trainee driver position.

Crap.
We have more outsiders than ever. The balance between internals and externals is very much in the favour of the external. Not only that we have minimal people from the armed forces and just as minimal from the emergency services.
The good thing about the railway is that you can walk in off the street with zero qualifications and have the same opportunity as every one else.
The assessment process is clearly outlined and has no bias (within limits) There is a equal process for everyone. There may be some bias between manual sifts but the assessment is a winner take all approach.
The advantage that forces and em services have is that they are already the kind of people who have the right skillset. Their mentality has been trained and they have undergone similar employment processes. That advantage can be said about anyone. Bus Drivers work similar to us and Tube Drivers are very close to what we do on a daily basis but when your in that room with headphones on it is you that needs to meet the criteria. It really can be a case where its "computer says no"
I would say of all my jobs I have every had that the driving role has probably the most fair system.

Hello. I have my assessment day on 13th July. I emailed GTR recruitment as I have already passed the group bourden and TRP1-2. I wanted to know if I needed to sit them again, have had no response. Was wondering if anyone has got a reply back from them regarding resitting these assessments.
Im exactly the same, i booked mine for the 13th but already passed everything with LOROL. Iv email GTR but no reply and its been a week already.
GTR, Thameslink side.
Still waiting for a response. Perhaps they are delaying because they thought my application was too good for trainee driver and they are considering me for a position of driver manager

After they check your details on the day of the assessment, they will let you know which tests you have to undertake on the day.
If you've previously passed the assessments as you say, then they will tell you that you do not have to complete them again.

Which depot is that at mate?
I concur. At my TOC, the majority of trainee drivers are from outside rail. Not all Station Staff / Guards / Train Managers etc have the necessary attributes to make driver.

Comutor and KT, well in my TOC we've had 29 trainee train drivers in the last couple of years and only 1 was an industry outsider. I agree it depends on the TOC and times are changing but if Mike is struggling then it doesn't hurt to try something that may help his applications.
I don't think you can get a railway job without qualifications anymore (unless it's via one of the apprenticeship routes), I wouldn't say it's impossible but recently a lot of our non-railway appointments have been to graduates.

Very pleased to have received an email yesterday from GTR inviting me to an assessment which I've now booked for the start of August (for Gillingham). Like others, I passed an assessment day with SE back last December so I'll be interested in which tests, if any, I'll have to actually do. Would they try and do interviews and medicals on the same day?
Has anyone got any idea as to when GTR are looking to get trainees started training? It seems they're moving quite quickly with recruitment. Any ideas on time frames for interviews, medicals, etc.? I guess time will tell.

We probably had 29 last week... My depot alone has around 20 currently sitting in the system (waiting DI, School, training etc) If you look at the "talent" pool thread how many of those are insiders ? THis entire section of the forum is pretty much outsiders trying to get in.
I agree to.
The "railway" is a huge employer with a huge range of opportunities. We have had graduates and we have an apprentice scheme aimed squarely at unemployed and non qualified applicants.
Can anyone who has already sat the assessments tell us if they did the interviews on the same day?
I passed my assessments with southeastern back in December so i assume i only have to do the DFFT test but just wondering if they are likely to give us interviews on the same day as i wanna make sure i'm prepared.

I passed assessment centre in 2014 with a different TOC, does anyone know whether Thameslink would accept these passes from over 2 years ago? Thanks in advance.

I had my assessment recently, no interviews on the day. These are arranged at a later date.
I hope it went well for you. I was going to ask the same question regarding the interviews as in the email it gives the impression that the MMI is after the assessments on the same day if there is time. Anyway don't suppose they dropped any hints as to how long the whole procedure is likely to take as they seem quite quick so far.

Passed, which is good! Yeah the information given does state the MMI will take place on the same day, however it does not.
They were not forthcoming on the timetable for scheduling interviews etc, however as always, patience is always the key in the railway. I was informed that Friday is always a good day for being informed of updates after the assessments (apparently!).
Congratulations on passing, I've got mine in a couple of weeks and having never done them before wondered if anyone can confirm if the assessment tests vary much from the examples they give in the email or much the same, ie fault finding etc
