Evening all. I’ve got an assessment day coming up and just wondered if anyone has any sample test material for the computer stages.

Also does anyone have any kind of idea what pass marks are needed for all the tests taken throughout the assessment process

Yes I have been but the more practice on different materials you can get the better in my opinion

Not sure when your assessment is but I think you have left it a bit late in the day to be sourcing alternative practice methods. Maybe software from the How 2 Become publisher might be of use. Do not forget about the Group Bourdon practice tool in the sticky thread on this part of the forum. I could tell you how I performed but it would not be relevant as I passed most tests to enhanced standard. I did get 25 out of 43 on the TRP Part 1 Dials test but I would not obsess on that.

No offence but I have not always found the practice material to be useful. I fail to see how photos of kitchen scenes and microwaves are meant to prepare me for photos of traffic scenes of unusual layouts in foreign countries (ATAVT test). I actually went around the middle of Leeds and London as well as Holland, Germany and Sweden taking photographs of buses and traffic lights so I could practice for my tests.

Well, I am offended. I passed everything first time, and for the record did all 43 on the dials. The relevance of the practise material is that it uses the same core cognitive functions as the real tests, but not exactly the same thing, otherwise you will become exam prepped, not knowledge prepped.

If you went all the way to Holland to take pics to pass a test, that's a bit weird....

I would suggest that you are wrong, and would fail the attitude test. No offence, of course

The above is based solely on the principle that I drive trains, and you dont.

It was not my intention to offend you but I may risk offending you further. Regarding the very specific example of the ATAVT Traffic Perception test. I believe you have a hand full of photos in the practice material. How quickly do you think I am going to be able to memorise the content of these photos at which point, using the same photos to practice becomes futile because now you are testing memory instead of the ability to recognise objects in a set time span?

Not quite sure what you mean by knowledge prepared but I can see your argument about being exam-prepared. I would argue that the latter is the case with many candidates for the job who will be practising the Group Bourdon test religiously. Out of interest, and I understand if you do not wish to disclose this, but what practice materials did you use for your assessments other than the standard issue and did you ever use the Group Bourdon practice tool yourself?

I am not really bothered if my 'activity' is perceived as normal or otherwise, I call it improvisation. I was actually passing through Holland on an 11 day road trip to Scandinavia to see the Atlantic Road but that is another story, as fascinating as it is.

I used what what was supplied by the OPC, and barely even looked at that.

Ok, to clarify, I drive trains for pay, not a 47 on a heritage line.

Yes, it is subtle the grey box you are looking at will go a darker shade of grey and that is when you have to hit the green button. Be prepared to sit and stare at this flashing grey square for 30 mins, don't be distracted and try not to pay any attention to those around you as you might start earlier or later and be put off by hearing them hit the button and think you should have done too! I did find this test straight forward, weirdly the one thing I had to be careful of was to not have an involuntary reaction and the press the button because you were hovering over the button for so long.

I am not 100% sure what you mean but the way my computer based assessments worked was that we sat 3 straight away, first up was the WAFV (Vigilance) Test which is the grey box test, then onto the ATAVT Perception Test and then the 2 Hand Co-Ordination Test you manage the breaks in between, my advice with all of this is to take your time and make the most of the couple of practice tests before you go into the real thing.

We then had a break where they went and checked our results,if we hadnt passed we would be sent home there and then. As I did pass we then went onto completing the SJT questions which they then used for our MMI in the afternoon.

There were definitely no intentional distractions from what I experienced.

Options on the computer based questions, then they gave us some specific competency based scenarios and asked us to provide examples to answer them which they drilled us on as part of the MMI
