Trainee Driver Opportuities, Excluded by my current locality

Hi,

I m new to the forum. I have been looking for a trainee role for a little while and I have become aware of this forum.

Just been spending some time again tonight checking various TOC websites and using other various websites, I spotted a freight opportunity because I don't currently live within 60 minutes travel time of the training locations.

My situation is that I am in my mid 30s but do not have any kids and I would be happy to re-locate for the right job and a job as I train driver definitely fits that bill, I would therefore be happy to work and live in most area of the country. (Although I would prefer to move north of the West Mids than South).

I have been looking at all TOC after finding a list on your forum from an old post of the various TOC across country, am I wasting my time looking at the length and breadth of the country for an opportunity and should I concentrate on West Midlands Railway only?

You're certainly not wasting your time looking at different areas of the country. It's the people who can't or are unwilling to show that level of flexibility that will probably find the process more difficult.

Yes you will unfortunately have that thing where some TOCs look at people from outside their "catchment area" with negative eyes but there's still plenty of companies out there that certainly consider people needing to relocate.

The key aspects to getting any driver job are flexibility and patience so as long as you show both you'll be fine mate.

Check out EMR, they are recruiting for depot drivers and accept people who will relocate.

I relocated from Kent to Somerset/Wiltshire so it is possible.
If you don’t try it won’t happen.

South Western Railway and Great Western Railway definitely have a "willing to relocate" tickbox on their application forms. Some other companies under the Firstgroup umbrella might too

Arl , London Overground definitely accept relocation. One of my colleagues moved from Newcastle upon Tyne to London for the job .

To be honest, it isn't as much as a stumbling block as you first thought.

I moved from Devon to Essex for my job! I remember at the interview them kindly pointing out that if I got the job I would probably have to relocate, 5 hour commute each way was probably not the best! Spoil sports

Thanks will look at that now, I have seen that to be fair and it is a strange one for me because it is close-ish probably to close to relocate, would prefer Yorkshire in a strange way because then I would have to relocate, strange logic I know.

Thanks for all the responses, defiantly has kept me motivated to keep looking. I think I have just missed the boat on West Midlands Trains.

Am I doing the right thing with looking on each TOC website or would you advise a central location for all jobs (not that I am aware that one exists)?

There isn't a central repository for all job unfortunately, so set up email alerts, check the TOC websites regularly, use this forum and you will have it covered!
