Trainee driver course fail

Hi all ,new to the site so I'll keep I short .
I have recently failed the final part of a rules course and was wondering if the two year retake waiting time would be for my company only .or say for instance if I wanted to apply for another driving job with a different company would I be able to apply sooner .Many thanks in advance

Were you ok during the rest of the course ?

I've discussed the harshness many times and no-one seems to believe me. Work hard, don't fail.


Sorry to hear about your loss. your first point of call is your TOC. Will the offer a second attempt ? If not, then how badly did you fail ?

Personally I would base my options on how badly I failed. If I was close then I would ask for a second attempt. If that was out of the question then my options would be to find employment. If there is an option to remain with the company but reapply in 2yrs then I would most likely take that option. If there was another TOC close by then I would call their HR department to see what they could potentially offer and if they would consider my application.

It is a personal choice. Rules never stop, then there is traction and manual handling to consider. Weigh you options and consider how close or how far you were. Weigh the employment and your financial situation and consider your best options.

There are a few threads about failure and working for an alternative TOC. I suggest searching for those threads and give them a good read.

You have been given some sound advice here. Although as mentioned the TOC wants you to pass, they get nothing from failing you so maybe consider if this role is for you?

My TOC used to give you a second attempt as almost guaranteed. That got abused and they also found that those that failed the course would also fail it the second time. The course isn't hard and comes down to what is essentially a memory test. There is some oddities that occur and it isn't always logical but difficult ? Not really.

They also know that rules is just a step on a long ladder. They know if you would be able to progress through the rest of the course. They also have to consider the investment. The cost is very much something they consider.

Is it fair to not give a second attempt ? Even if your close ? There are many who believe that there shouldn't be a second chance as we certainly don't get that luxury when driving. There is also a question if knowledge fade. If you can't get through a 12 (ish) week course then what about weeks later after your manual handling ? After 2yrs ? After 10 ? My TOC now has an active measure of knowledge fade and there are complaints about the fairness of that. Trainees and Managers are seeing the knowledge fade in black and white.

When I passed it was 100% or fail. Now we have a pass mark (95% I Think) If your 'close' to the pass mark you are actually further than where you need to be. Add in the expected 5/6% fade and your going to fall considerably behind.

Everyone gets an even chance and the fairness comes from having one rule for all. If one person got a second attempt and another didn't then it would be just as unfair.

None of us wants anyone to fail. From the outside looking in it always sounds harsh but in reality I don't think it is.

It comes down to that personal choice. I would also advise the OP to speak to his Trainers and Managers and discuss where they went wrong. Would they say its worth holding off for the 2yrs. They have the experience to determine if the Trainee was close enough that its worth pushing for another go or if they have the aptitude to continue.

Failed by 2% but unfortunately for me I got flu so missed quite a bit of key stuff found the course easy! But found it difficult to catch up as there was so much info being fired at us because the course was ramping up at that point. The managers were fantastic and got me my old job back on the spot and told me to reapply in a couple of years time which I will ! I just wanted to know if it the waiting time was across the industry as in all tocs (Just out of interest)

TOC specific. As I said there are a few threads about others applying elsewhere. It is difficult to catch up as the courses move at such a pace. Is the 2yrs a fixed rule or can you re-apply if one comes up sooner. Great to hear they helped you out.
