What does everybody think if the train companies had a tracking app they could run for railtours, that transmitted positions every mile or so allowing enthusiasts along the line to know exactly where it is?

If it was free, then probably would be a good idea (if someone had the time and effort to set one up). If I had to pay, I wouldn't use it as Yahoo Gen groups are just as good.

I could make one, its just if the train engineers would use it - all they'd need to do would be to set it going when the left the first station and blu tak it to the side of the cab - by posting directly from the cab automatically, to a twitter feed perhaps, everyone could follow its progress live.

Anyone got any contacts with A1 Steam or any operating companies that own steam trains?

Yes.
However first, I would like you to tell me what is in it for them?
It sounds to me that you want a system that will be of great use to those of us who go to the lineside to view tours while the tour operators and loco owners are keen to see more people travel and they, the passengers, of course, have no use for such a service.
While I agree, it's a nice idea and I would find it very useful, there has to be something in it for everyone.
You might find that subscribing to NatPres's SMS service will do what you want for steam tours and, I understand, that they've had GPS tracking available on some tours. I can't comment on how useful it is as I've never used it.
Something else that may provide what you want is Open Train Times which lists railtours as well as ordinary passenger and freight trains. If real time information is added then we have everything we need.
Try here for next Saturday's trip to Carlisle. You'll need to select advanced mode in settings to see the detail.
There's a thread about Open Train times already.

I agree there has to be some incentive for them wanting to use it - so the business case needs to be fine tuned a bit. Various things could be added to the stream of updates - URLs for the next tour, discount codes for booking (which would also allow tracking of conversions). The passengers would know exactly where they are if they were on the train (as they'd be able to follow the progress too on their phones) so you could also offer them info on upcoming tours on the same route, same loco, etc.

While it is mostly for the line side photographer crowd, why not try wrap it up into a sales tool for more bookings and brand awareness. Just have an app on the AppStore with a bit of PR in the form of press releases would get them more awareness anyway.

You can just get the information for free off various gen groups, or you can go to the information desks at larger stations and ask nicely for an update there.

I agree with you, you can get the info from websites, ask people at stations, etc. But what if you're waiting at a bridge, or along the line, miles from a station, wondering if its on time?

Yes, the information is available on the web - but not doing it because its already online would defeat the point of apps in the first place - how many apps are out there that just replicate what you can find on the internet?

I'm talking about an app, that the train drivers would set going in the cab (so its a very limited market), but they'd be able to control the updates, and whats on them through a very easy to use screen. Sending updates on the position in realtime is just one part of it, they could plug other tours, attract further business, raise brand awareness.

The model of charging for a service online is dying very quickly - offering something free and then upselling is what a lot of these companies are doing (I'm not talking about train companies, just in general) - so isn't it about time that the steam companies could offer something similar - give out some information for free, make a big song and dance that you can do real time tracking, and then you can plug further tours and the overall goal being to increase bookings and raise more money for the operators to keep the steam trains going. They would have to fund the development of the app, I'm willing to put something together that may benefit them, that every train tour company could tailor to promote themselves by using apps and Twitter as the medium to do it.

Its just convincing them that its worthwhile and trialling it with an operator to get their thoughts on what it could for them would be key with any project, regardless of whether its an app or not, hence the question of does anyone have any links with train companies, eg A1 Steam

Open Train Times is a great resource, I've only used it once but have already wrote out a nice list of freight workings to check out tomorrow.

My question is how reliable is it? I only ask because a particular freight movement jumps out at me (6H92 Weaste - Hope Earles Sdgs) and although it says it is booked to run from Dec 2011 to Dec 2012 I haven't seen a train at Weaste for over a year, in fact it looks like the site is finally being decommissioned.

I don't mean to insult OTT I just don't want to spend the better part of 6 hours at Wigan NW and get the three movements that are listed on Freightmaster.

Reliability isn't the idea of it, it will show you the booked path, it doesn't mean the train will run. There are loads of freight schedules that will never run or run once in a blue moon. Getting the FOC to remove that path is another matter entirely...

That would be the beauty of an app for the tour market - in that the data that you'd be provided with would be real, realtime information as oppose to was should have happened, or what might happen.
For following freight services, you'd have to resort to online services with routes and the site might not be accurate, but for tours, the operators could use it as a marketing tool and in return provide location data in realtime.
