Arrived last night at Rainhill station to travel on the 00:04 back to Liverpool . The departure board was showing as train cancelled, member of train crew unavailable.. Sat on the platform to book a taxi home on my phone app, was having some trouble connecting.anyway finally booked one and paid with Google pay, by this time it was around 00:10, my taxi app was showing assigning driver ,I noticed train headlights in the distance. thought at first it would be an ECS, it turned out to be my train, around 8 minutes late. I boarded and (hopefully) managed to cancel my taxi, though the charge is still showing on my account. Train was sparsely populated (it's normally very busy ) so I guess this reinstated train wasn't advertised leaving a lot of people paying for alternative transport. There was no one at the booking office and no announcement made.think this is poor form really. If I don't get my cancelled taxi fare back surely I would have a claim?

The service you caught either had extra stops added, or it was a special service. As it was due to arrive at the same time as the cancelled one, I can see how the automated system would get quite confused about this, hence for the lack of information.
Your original train was https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:G32368/2024-08-16/detailed#allox_id=1
The train that turned up was: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:99973/2024-08-16/detailed

As for your question, that would be a complaint you'll need to make to Northern CS.

I would recommend that you consider downloading the National Rail app. That way you can whack the station in and see all the departures - it's great for stations which do not have full departure boards!

I was at Manchester Oxford Road last night at the time that train departed.

The original Wilmslow-Liverpool was terminated at Manchester Airport and an additional service was ran in its path starting at Manchester Oxford Road. For all intents and purposes the same service to the average passenger, but not to the railway.

The train wasn't showing a platform allocation when I first entered the station, but evidently someone realised this and several announcements were made. I assume a platform was allocated on the boards there, but I was more focussed on the Cheshire Lines train.

No platforms being allocated means it won't show on the platform CIS in my experience, but if there's a general departure screen at the station entrance (for example) then it would show on there as a "-" under the platform number.
