Train rear light

Yesterday i was talking to the security guard at Tinsley yard (whats left of it) and i managed to persuade him to let me take one of the red flashing lights from the back of a train (there were four on the floor next to his office).
I didnt realise until today that every now and then it flashes once even though its turned off, should it do this or did he give me a dodgy one?

If it flashes while its turned off it usually means the battery is on the way out.

I don't really understand why someone would want one in the first place and I don't know why the security guard thought it was ok to give away. If they were not in use they should have been returned to which ever FOC they belong to. There not cheap either.

He did say they had been there for about 2 years so i dont think they were been used

My thoughts exactly. With threads like this about, it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of us start receiving querulous e-mails from Network Rail whenever something of interest to enthusiasts goes missing from railway property! :roll:

Of course, what I'm getting at only applies to a (Thankfully) very small minority of railway enthusiasts...But even with that in mind, I can still see NR wanting to use us all as a source for theft gen whenever it's needed...

These lamps were introduced onto BR when DOO(NP) was introduced back in the mid 80's.
The battery inside maybe a rechargable battery.
The tail lamp is placed on the rear most vehicle of all things that move on the track.
The idea behind this is to signify to the signallers or others on or about the track that the train is complete.
The rule book put it like this,
" A train is a collection of vehicles complete with a tail lamp. "

As a non smoker in the oil tail lamp days, I had to carry a box of matches with me to light the tail lamp at all times.
There is an old saying , " When you are in the crap, do not shout about it."
Also have alook at Sections 1 to 7 of the The The Act 1968, cos thats wot you might go to court on.

Did you not think that the security guard was in no position to allow you to take it and might be in the wrong for authorising you to do so? He obviously didn't seem to be the sharpest tool in the box (what security guards are?), so it should have struck you as a bit odd to ask for it in the first place and then get permission to take it. :roll:

P.S. What would you want with it anyway?

I'm not an expert on the Theft Act 1968, so cannot say if this is a technical theft or not, but it is certainly possession of stolen goods.

I would advise this thread to be closed and deleted as soon as possible, as releasing information like this may result in the security guard being fired, and you being prosecuted.

Despite being allowed to 'take' it, NR may not believe so.

I suspect 9K43 meant this type of lamp specifically rather than tail lamps in general

Why should it be deleted? The security guard is obviously a complete liability and if he got the sack then it might actually be doing some good, as he obviously isn't doing his job as a security guard properly!

Actually paid £1 about 35 years ago for a pass to allow me around Tinsley.

Your knowingly handling stolen goods which is an offence. And you know it stolen because the security guard didn't get any permission so it seems. Wonder if you obtained the other various lights through official means.
