Can someone please shed light on this please . Once a train has been prepped for service , how long is the prep form valid for ? I was always under the impression that it was only valid for 24 hours and that after that if the train hadn't entered service a new prep needed to be carried out and a new form signed off .On the depot where I work there seems to be some confusion on how long the preps remain valid and it needs clarifying and I cant find any relevant information appertaining to this . Any thoughts please ?

We don't have a prep form but prep each unit daily. Preparation for us is 'Prepare from Berth' So I guess you could say that you only ever need to PB if it was from Berth.

Maintenance depots are different as any unit leaving from there cannot have any faults whatsoever.

My best guess is that it would be unit and TOC specific. Do you have any company standards written down anywhere ?

Could well be toc specific definitely not in the rule book , will need to get hold of my manager as it's causing some confusion , but also thought there may have been an industry standard .

Our units prep is valid 24hrs, however if the unit returns to depot within that time it will be prepped again if on entering service it will end the day being out-stabled somewhere where there is no prep staff available.

Hope that makes some sense :)

The confusion that's arising concerns trains that are prepped on depot but then not used for service , it seems that some of my supervisors are now under the impression that the prep is valid indefinitely as long as the train is left secure .

Ours are valid for 24 hours.

Occasionally I'll go to the depot first thing in the morning to collect a unit, the prep slip may say the unit was prepped at 2200 hrs the previous night. So I ring the DOC and question it as the 24 hours will expire at 10 pm when the train will still be in service. All they do is send a fitter out to replace the prep slip with one timed at 4 am that morning.

It's not unusual now to find the prep slip signed by the same fitter with identical times on numerous different units, which is clearly impossible unless he has lots of clones assisting.

At some point it will come to bite them if the unit is involved in an incident with a safety system at fault, as the data recorder will show the prep having been done many hours before the prep slip claims it was and the 24 hours may have actually expired.

Exactly my thoughts Gadgetman , at the depot that I work from it's the Depot Drivers that sign the forms , I'd never put my signature to a form that had just been given a new time , but god forbid if this was found to be the case and the train was involved in any incident which called into question its suitability for traffic .

24hrs on GA. I can't say I really check them apart from on IC sets to see if load 9 or 10. I have known drivers kick off about it this dropping whoever prepped it in the do do  Often just forgotten to hang slips.

On the underground when leaving the depot must have been prepped within 24 hours, then ok for days work. E.G. train could be prepped at 6.am Monday, leave depot 5.am Tuesday and be ok for the days service.

I don't know how this applies with the night tube

Exemptions can be granted in certain circumstances but I don't know who by or what the reasons are.

If only that was true....

It's two hours between prep and entering service for us, although that seems to be laid down in drivers' agreements on diagramming principles rather than any safety concern. If it comes out of service for more than two hours during the day, it needs a fresh prep.

As far as I know, that time limit doesn't apply for drivers working elsewhere for the same company, prepping the same units, but on different Ts&Cs.

All trains on Night Tube go out of service at some point throughout the night, this could be as late as 5am though after running from 5am the previous morning.

We've never had prep slips on our units, each unit is prepped once a day and is valid for 24 hours, each time they come of a maintenance depot they get re-prepped. As we run 24/7 and have continuous diagrams think the longest is 23 hours long, the train will be prepped during the day somewhere, by a driver so it can continue in service.
