Folks,
This might be a daft question however l was wondering if there are a lot of Train movements during the night. What l mean, say the last london to glasgow pendo service.l take it that train would be the first glasgow to london service the following morning.Does it happen that a train that has completed its journey,ie the last train, and has to be reallocated to another part of the network for passengers the next day.

l am thinking of trains on the wcml/ecml......cheers

Well the last London - Glasgow pendo, doesn't necessarily form the first return one, it could form the 3rd return one, to give it more of a "rest", and the third to last pendo forming the first one if that makes sense?

If that is what you are asking?

yip, that what l was asking,l thought it would be one train up and one train down,l didnt realise there would be several trains that could form the first run

Most trains will head to a depot or carriage sidings after their last turn of the day- ideally to be thoroughly cleaned and checked over, light maintenance carried out (if at a depot). As there will be trains that will finish up much earlier than the last one, these will be finished their prep for the next day earlier, so should (unless blocked in by later units) be more likely to form the first services

Diagrams are daily so it doesn't determine which diagram it will run tomorrow, only that it will start a diagram at the same location it ended.

So using the MF EUS - GLC timetable, saying it was a Monday...

The last SB Pendo off Glasgow is the 1840 to Euston, which will be formed from the 1330 ex Euston. So therefore the 1530,1630,1657,1730,1757,1830&1930 will all stay in Glasgow overnight.

That is 7 trains.

Therefore in theory, any of these trains could work the 0428, 0540, 0630, 0737, 0840, 0940 & 1040. 7 trains. Although it is more likely that the earlier ones arriving will run the earlier ones leaving. The 0536 ex Euston arr 1036 will then form the 1140

Simples :)

Sometimes you get stock balancing moves.
This is normally when a problem on the network means trains finish in the wrong place and have to be moved around to form the formations needed for the morning services, in the right location.
You'll also get defective trains moved from remote carriage sidings back to maintenance depots, and a train from the depot to the sidings to compensate.

There's also some pretty long ECS runs to the depot- I believe the XC stock that goes to Aberdeen (and from Aberdeen in the morning) goes to Edinburgh Craigtinney overnight?

FCC's Thameslink service virtually operates passenger services throughout the night with only a gap of 1hr 20 mins between the 'last' (02:32) and 'first' (03:52) off of St.Pancras.

Speaking generally, no. Usually the last train of the day will return ECS to the nearest appropriate stabling point run by the TOC or who services that TOCs trains. This is usually because by the end of the day they are getting dirty, and for diesels, need refuelling.

The exceptions to this are usually regarding engineering work when the ECS can't return to the depot due to the line being blocked, either the journey to the shed, or for the morning ECS to the station. This is usually planned. However, occasionally if the train is late the possesion will be held off until the train has terminated, and the train will then stable in the platform overnight. However, this is not ideal as the train will be dirty.

Yes it does, (or it certainly used to). These moves also have a habit of taking the Edinburgh South Suburban Line.

These are in-service runs - I got woken up by the bloody thing as it rattled past Pl2 in Aberdeen the other morning!

No long ecs runs. aberdeen's xc services are formed as follows :

0640 Dundee - Aberdeen is formed of.empty stock working from Edinburgh, this.set then forms 0820 Aberdeen - Penzance.

0925 Plymouth - Aberdeen runs back as 2131 Aberdeen - Edinburgh.

this is mon-friday

In another addition to this thread what is the longest ecs run. I know that normally the 1848 Pad to Cnm 2103, runs back through to Landore. Although currently running in service to Worcester Shrub Hill due to.the costwolds improvements.

There is a 2x158 working off Eastcroft at about 3am for Liverpool.

I presume this is to ensure that services run to Luton airport through the night? I can think of no other reason.

Bloody hell thats a long way! Is there no where else nearer to Liverpool that can service 158's overnight? What about Edge Hill or Newton Heath?

There are certain of these late trains that are standing room only the 01:06 and 01:32 often are out of St P, and at weekends even the 02:32 can be busy. In this day and age if there wasn't the demand they wouldn't run them.

The 158s are EMT operated d, would think they wouldnt want them at other depots :) if they stabled them overnight closer to Liverpool they would still have to taxi driver+ guard to pick them up :)

.... actually that is only Friday as last train is 01:32 on sats due to works. The 01:32 n a sat night is another standing room only train. I can't say I've ever noticed many people heading to the airport on any of the late late trains.

I've often wondered why there are not more late trains south of river (where i live). The last train home to Richmond on a Friday and Saturday night is 00.18 which often leads to a last minute dash on to the platform at Waterloo! Not good if my wife is wearing heels!

Partly because there is not the demand, partly because of engineering work constraints and partly because there is a good night bus network. The 0018 from Waterloo goes to Kingston and then runs empty to Strawberry Hill where it is booked to arrive at 0126. There is also an 0042 which goes to Kingston and Strawberry Hill but that is the last train out of Waterloo on the suburban network. On Saturdays there is an 0142 to Strawberry Hill and even that can get quite busy sometimes.

The last one into the depot at Strawberry Hill is usually 0142 and the first one out is at 0441 so there is only three hours where there are no trains in the area.
