Can anyone help with a train which leaves Carlisle around 4 pm and goes down the Settle Carlisle to Preston then up to Barrow then to Windermere then to Carlisle, back down the West Coast main line to Preston and back up Settle Carlisle. According to Real time Trains it runs every night except Saturday and gives times along the route as it progresses. I went to have a look on Friday at Preston to see what it was. Despite Real time showing the arrival..... no train. Any ideas anyone?

Paths for 'treatment trains' (most often seen in the autumn as 'leaf fall' trains), are often shown in the system all year round. That way they can be used by NR for other uses, such as wedkilling trains on an ad hoc basis without having to set up an individual path.

Obviously the vast majority of these potential services never operate.

This looks like it is the train you are referring to, it appears to be live for about 3 months, but runs MWO, with RTT showing the caveat 'runs as required':

As per the posts above, it is an RHTT (Rail Head Treatment Train).

There are around 40 such trains which cover almost every line in the country;
this particular train is loco-hauled (some are MPVs) using DRS 66/4s and runs
as 3J11.

I went to have a look on Friday at Preston to see what it was. Despite Real time showing the arrival..... no train. Any ideas anyone?

It definitely ran on Friday as I heard it pass here (Bolton-le-Sands),
but it is booked to recess at the PCD in Preston, rather than the main
platforms, so it's possible that you didn't notice it at that side of the
station if you were expecting it to be in a platform?

The paths get left in so they dont have to be rewritten every year when something else has stolen the path and we find we cant fit the RHTTs in. Not a good situation as they would go in STP and due to their importance would have to have a path, delay minutes or not.....

more important than RHTT - such a thing exists?
