Train movement controller FGW Reading Depot

Hi all, first post... I have my stage two assessment and interview this Friday, really looking forward to it.

Got the assessment guide/help booklet but was told on the phone that there will be a signalling test which isn't included in the booklet. Can't find any info on the signalling test on the forum or on the Internet. Any info would be great regarding the second stage and what to look out for on the day.

Hope I find out I'm successful on the day, this lad hates waiting.

It's a signaller that controls the signals on a depot. Some depots (e.g. Longsight, Heaton, Reading, Neville Hill ? ) have ground signals controlling movements.

Unlike the depots I normally work at that have ancient infrastructure and very few signals, which makes the job much more complicated for the Driver Operator.

It's a controller of depot movements, manages shunters and drivers, responsible for forming service along with plenty of other stuff..

I know that role, they call them Operations Team Leaders in Northern. They're the ones who give out the moves at NH informing Driver Operators which unit to get and where it needs to go. Its more like a depot controller, not like a depot signaller.

A few thousand more than a Driver Operator (whether this is justified or not is debatable), salaries are around £35k but £45-£55k typically with overtime or £60k if you live there.

Yes like a yard controller/supervisor. Some people like the job but its not for everyone. To some it does not appeal to as its all office-based, so would rather stay Driver Operating/Shunting. It is also an extremely busy role at the larger depots.

This role in some TOC's requires you to have been a Driver Operator or a Fitter first, not usually a role you can just walk into with no previous experience of depot work.
