The first 1hr59 of overtime due to delay is actually zero, zip, nowt, nothing. Ferret can clarify if I got the time right, but you don't get any until 2 hours late. One of a HUGE list of reasons Senior Conductors aren't keen on harmonising.

do you mean no EXTRA pay (ie higher hourly rate) or NO PAY (ie voluntary) surely the later is illegal forcing someone to work for no money and work more than their rosta'd hours. Surely the union would have some say in that.

Well, it's been in place for a number of years and has been negotiated by the hopeless reps that Train Managers obviously had/have. They get guaranteed comission and about 1k a year extra than Senior Conductors. That's for maximum 11hr turns (10hr SC), Sunday part of working week (voluntary SC), can move your rosters with notice up to 4 hours (I may have number wrong) and no overtime payment for the first 1hr59min resulting from delay. I know what you're saying about forced overtime, but if you've gone to New St and back and your train back is 1hr30 late and you say 'I'm not being forced to do overtime', how do you propose to getting back from, say, Basingstoke back to Bournemouth?

On the whole train guards/conductors/managers have far better t&c's and hourly rate of pay than bus drivers. How hard is it to get a job as a bus driver compared with train manager?

im a bus driver and quite frankly it was a piece of p*** when i applied. i was 18 and had 6 months car experience driving

I'd imagine that a bus driver with 2 hours paid overtime would generally earn considerably less than a TM with 2 hours unpaid overtime.

Another way of looking at it is you get paid 2 hours overtime a week whether you do it or not!

thanks all. I have to go to the medical yet but im not worried about that. Im going to continue with FCC and see where it goes, but I couldnt afford to turn the TM job done incase I dont get the job with FCC

Congratulations on the job! Glad you weren't too put off! there are good points to it as well - my mate does get a lot of free time with the family, and if you don't know what it was like to work for other TOC's, you probably won't mind the stuff he complaisn about!

the way i see it, there are bad points with every job ever conceived. the ones above dont strike me as overly bad. i just look at the good sides, being a conductor on a train is something ive done before and absolutely love!
