Guards are also forced to undergo a interview and assessment centre now to be 'promoted' to TM.
If a TM messes up they are 'demoted' to unit Guard, if a unit Guard messes up they're sacked.
TMs cross cover DMU work at their rate of pay, Guards cross cover TM unit work at the guards rate of pay........
Whereas unit drivers sign up for a normal transfer to the HST links, when they get to the top they move a cross, no interview etc.
The assessments as the same for both roles, but the comp. questions at interview are slightly different. The last few intakes have been guards to TMs. But there are some depots (Paddington) that don't have guards to 'promote' from so they take anyone with a pulse!
There is an agreement which is now being enforced that only once all internal guard candidates have been intervied and found unsuitable can they look to other grades, it's written as a line of promotion.
Depending who you ask (TM or Guard) they will tell you their role is more difficult. Route knowledge is the same, at my depot we cover several hundard miles of routes over TCB, AB, Axle counter track, semaphore sigalling, token block, DC third Rail, short platforms, request stops, local door platforms multiple traction etc.
Yes, TMs have to watch for doors on the catch a huge problem if your not switched on but usually TMs have despatchers to assist with despatch. They also have SDO which is a risk if your not switched on again. But usually they revert to ops only mode, so don't do revenue when they're working the Berks and Hants or Cotswolds with every stop a different SDO position.
Guards are expected to do both with anything from a single 153 to a 6 or 7 car multiple traction formation from Weymouth in the high summer. Try working a 7 vehicle with front door request stops with a 150/1 - 150/1 + 153 + 158 the front two units have no walk through ! lol
I'm sure Mr Flamimgo Will give a insight into his role also....
TMs at Virgin earn circa 40k. as opposed to the circa 33k at FGW I would suggest the FGW TM has a more challenging role than the Virign TM though.........
