Two people have died and 18 others injured after a train ploughed into a truck stopped on tracks near Turin, Italy.
The train hit the stationary truck and derailed, flinging passengers across the carriages last night. According to local reports, the train engineer was killed instantly and at least 18 others were injured, two critically.

One of the injured was reported to be a crew member, while the rest were passengers. Shocking images of the scene show the derailed train’s carriages mounted on top of each other as dozens of firefighters search for more passengers. One woman, who broke her leg in the crash, said she felt as if she was being pushed from behind, then fell.

The Italian press http://www.lastampa.it/2018/05/24/c...o-a-caluso-j3vXQPsIXOYaz7G0nCAJEL/pagina.html, details a convoy of an exceptional load, one escort vehicle and two lorries. The first lorry started crossing, the barriers came down and the train struck the lorry. The fatalities are reported as the train driver and the driver of the escort vehicle.

Reminiscent of Hixon in 1968 - transporter got stuck on an automatic crossing, with 11 deaths on the Manchester-London train including the train driver.
The stock on this train looks to be older style loco-hauled coaches.

My knowledge of the Italian railway system is rather limited but as you mention the stock appears to be loco-hauled and if so I'm wondering if it was being propelled rather than hauled as non of the images available so far seem to feature a locomotive?

Also on an Italian rail site at http://www.ferrovie.it/portale/articoli/7443
which implies that the lorry seems to have entered the crossing while the barriers were closing "...avrebbe impegnato il passaggio a livello mentre era in chiusura".
It also says the crossing was a half-barrier type with audible and visual warnings "...protetto con semibarriere e segnalazione ottico - acustica"

Many regional trains in Italy are loco+push-pull sets.

That's right - the report eastwestdivide links to says the DVT was leading - "con semipilota in testa ".

Many thanks both for clarifying.
