A 156 hit a tree yesterday on the Tyne Valley line, damaging the front cab but no injuries. Apparently contractors working for Gateshead Council were cutting down a tree near to the line between Ryton and Wylam, and the tree somehow fell onto the running line. 156454 working 2N21 11.22 Newcastle Carlisle was the train involved. From the pictures, a 142 was sent wrong-line down to the train to pick up those stranded. More info and pictures here.

In an unrelated incident, a train running ECS hit a trolley that had been placed on the line in the Middlesbrough area - more info here.

"Ageing 156-type train"? Any opportunity for the media to have a dig at Northerns' rolling stock fleet. The 156s are only middle age really, and a lot better quality than some portions of Northerns' fleet!

Glad that you've made it clear that the tree and the trolley were two separate incidents 142094; the thread title did briefly make me consider that the two incidents had befallen one particularly unfortunate, hapless train! ;)

Lol, it may well have been as well (as a MBR - Whitby and return working was cancelled, and Esk Valley line is 156s only now) - but that would have been rather unlucky for 454!

hang on a moment guys, has anybody spotted what I have? The 156s are developing a habbit of hitting things or to put it another way, the anti super sprinter mafia
are developing a reputation for trying to trash them! In the last 2 years Scotrail rets have had cows and landslides, an NXEA unit had an argument with a vehicle at a dodgy crossing and now this. Im not trying to make light of the more serius incident in that list but this class of unit does seam to be having a bad time.

Not entirely. Some of the Nunthorpe trains are still Pacers

The ECS involved is usually a 156 and forms the 0721 Nunthorpe Newcastle, but is sometimes a 142

Ah yes, normally associate Esk Valley trains with going to Whitby - quite right the Hexham - Nunthorpe trains are frequently 142s.
