yellow and black stripes is a reasonably common form for warning panels- and not unknown in the UK, being what shunting locomotives have.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Pendolino's fail the standards for sufficient yellow on their front if they run with the coupling cover removed. Might they ever run with the cover removed?

They certainly do run with the coupler cover removed sometimes, having seen it more than once. I wouldn't say it was particularly common though.

You make me wonder about Class 442s then. When they lose the cover under the cab windows that covers over the jumper cables and pipes when not in use.

The Pendolino livery doesn't have much yellow that isn't on the cover- the black comes well down below the windscreen, unlike the Virgin Voyager livery, which doesn't have a coupler cover. The 442s have the corridor connection!

Not sure, don't think so but I assume regulations will extend to HS2 - classic-compatibles will obviously need the yellow paint unless the NR situation changes. Applies to the e320s too but according to impressions they'll have yellow anyhow.

This is from the 'launch'/PR event at Kensington Gardens.

Oh yes, I remembered hearing that the e320s are taking shape :D Definitely don't look too bad - yes, when will they enter service? Do they deserve a thread to call their own?

God they look awful! Though they've done the best they can with the livery. They'll never hide that awful front end, it sort of looks like a vomiting whale or a slug!

Haha  ;)

Yes that would be logical I suppose, and I guess it starts so far back on the leading carriage as some sort of aerodynamic wizardry perhaps?

It is. The fairing contains the Many Pantographs, Air Con units and other equipment. I believe it gave a double digit improvement in the trains air resistance vs the ICE3. Doesn't make it look any better though!

The good thing about the livery on the e320s is that most people would simply think it's part of the design.

So that is a 'Pan on every car then? I thought it looked like it, but then thought surely that would be a tad excessive!?

Different pantos for different voltages I'd assume? I'm sure ICE3s (and others) have a veritable forest of pantographs for dealing with all the different systems they come across.

There were other NR trains which didn't require yellow front ends......

...the Class 487s of the W&C NSE line. IIRC they also just ran with red headlamps.

The one livery I find incredible is acceptable is the thin strip on the front of Grand Central HSTs.

That's because they were entirely underground. Underground is an exception as they didn't wear standard NSE livery.

The ex-SR ones had an all white front end

The International ICE 3MS has 6 (2x High Speed AC, 2x DC and 2 others I suspect are for Swiss Knitting) across 8 coaches. I'm not sure how many an E320 will have, but given that a ICE3 needs both DC pans up in the Netherlands due to the high currents then it's possible that an E320 which is basically 2 permanently coupled ICE3s (without cabs at the inner ends) will need 4 up!
