Aren't tickets generally issued to 'Wigan Stns' rather than specifically to Wallgate/North Western? I imagine a similar anomaly exists with Wakefield, though there are trains between Westgate and Kirkgate. Likewise Exeter, although St. Davids to Central is a viable journey that someone might want to make, unlike the Wigan example.

Kirkgate- Westgate is also viable given that you can get a direct train between the two. They are a fairly long walk from eachother as well (I have done a connecting journey between the two for convenience sake, albeit on my metrocard

Does the Northern Rail service from Huddersfield to Wakefield Westgate make a stop at Wakefield Kirkgate ?

It does - it has to reverse there. I generally avoid hanging around in Kirkgate for long changes as many services don't connect very well there and there's not a lot to do.

Asking via Ince (Manchester) flags up OP single £22.30 or OP Rtn £22.60. Anytime Day Single is £24.00

At that price it'll be cheaper to ask for the GM Day Rail Ranger ticket - £4.60
For a Wallgate-North Western single, I would have thought the most appropriate ticket would be a day return for Wigan Stations to Ince, assuming that is where you choose to change. This would come in at £1.00 for a CDR.

I'll see your £1 and beat it!

18:32 Wigan Wallgate [WGW] > Hindley [HIN] 18:37 0h 05m
18:45 Hindley [HIN] > Wigan North Western [WGN] 18:56 0h 11m

Cheapest fare £0.80 Cheap Evening Return.

It could be achieved for £0.75 if you get a train which stops at Ince.
