Hi all,

I'm traveling from Stansted airport at 1930, to Selby, on an advance ticket routed Peterborough & LNER on 2nd October. I booked this slightly before the announcement of the overtime ban, which is presumably the reason that 2h54 has been pre-cancelled. My itinerary was to get the 1930 towards Liverpool Street with changes at Bishops Stortford, Ely, Peterborough and York. I'd basically like to know should I wait to see if the train gets reinstated? I know there's not much hope. It's only the bishops Stortford to Ely leg that's cancelled but obviously that massively throws out the entire itinerary. Would my advance be accepted by a different route? I likely can't travel much before 1930 . My flight arrives at 1810 so there may be some scope but would I get someone insisting that I should have taken the 1930 were I to take an earlier train out of Stansted? Assuming that's a possibility of course...

What are the info facilities like at Stansted and Bishops Stortford?

If all else fails how do I go about invoking condition 28.2?

Incidentally LNER are still selling this itinerary. Someone may wish to tell them...

So.... I was advised to take an earlier train, which I didn't make thanks to the flight being delayed and the stupid automatic passport gates not working for me (they never do!). But I did make the original train to Bishops Stortford. After some initial arguing as to whether the train actually existed, and blaming the third party retailer I used ('you didn't book with Greater Anglia directly it's not our problem - well why would I anyway when the bulk of my journey was with LNER?') the guy at the booking office found me an itinerary actually involving XC which I wouldn't have thought I would be permitted to use and told me to use that. In any case I didn't get my ticket checked. This would've gotten me as far as York. In the end there was a slight delay to the LNER train I was intending to get. Literally a few minutes, and the XC service arrived into Peterborough roughly on time. I made the connection - and I don't know how - in roughly 40 seconds flat. Which gave me 10 seconds to spare. In the end I therefore safely got to Selby.

Incidentally on the LNER train was a rather desperate guard. I was ok because I was on the 'right' train, but a guy with a split ticket bought through the sheepline had missed his connection, the guard said that 'your'e lucky revenue aren't on, you're not covered as you've split your ticket.' I raised exception to this, and the guard maintained the passenger would have only been covered on a through ticket advance, I tried to explain the conditions of travel but he was having none of it. I very nearly filed a complaint about him, but thought I'd let it rest in the end... Mostly because I was exhausted and couldn't be bothered.

I would still encourage you to submit a complaint reporting back the misinformation that you saw being given out on board as this is unacceptable.

Am I right in thinking that it is NRCOT 14.2 that covers passengers in this event? Does it give us the same rights as if we had a through ticket?

In short, yes. The internal knowledgebase ("Travelling with Advance Tickets FAQs") also re-affirms this right for staff that bother to read it. See also https://trainsplit.com/blog/what-happens-if-my-train-gets-cancelled and https://trainsplit.com/blog/myths-split-ticketing-and-online-retailers which set out the position.
