Train fire closes major station

A major railway station has been evacuated after reports of a fire in a train.

Smoke was seen coming from a train at about 1840 BST at Birmingham New Street station, a spokesman for British Transport Police said.

Hundreds of commuters were told to leave trains and were guided to the car park while shops and the station concourse were closed.

Firefighters have been called to the scene.

Network Rail said a fire was reported on an Arriva cross country service as it entered New Street.

A spokesman said some trains are having to wait outside the station.

He added: "The station staff have seen no immediate evidence of a fire on the train.

"But the fire brigade has been called and will confirm whether there has been a fire."

Arriva cross country [sic]?! Bet Arriva won't be happy with them being called that!

Not very major news. My mum worked at New Street for 9 months, there were three fires on trains at New Street in that time. And real fires, with flames, not "The station staff have seen no immediate evidence of a fire on the train" fires like this one. So I don't know why the station has been closed, I'm sure...

A small fire was found in the exhaust of a train, which was then moved from a platform to an isolated piece of track, the fire service said.

Ruth Johnson, who was walking along the platform...saw the fire on the roof of the train...

Unsuprisingly, there was actually a fire, with real flames! :roll:

Have you not read my post properly? I quoted what *I* read in the article, which was "The station staff have seen no immediate evidence of a fire on the train". Blame the BBC if they later decided there was fire visible.

My point still stands anyway, that they don't usually bother with fire alarms if they see smoke/fire.
