Train fire at Exeter St Davids

From DS Fire & Rescue tonight:

Two appliances from Danes Castle and one from Middlemoor were mobilised to reports of a train on fire.

On arrival crews discovered a small fire behind the panelling of the train.

Crews stripped back the panelling from the roof to reveal the fire.

They used a Scotty pack, small tools, a short extension ladder, thermal imaging camera and a CO2 extinguisher to extinguish the fire.

There was ten per cent damage to the extraction unit in the ventilation system.

It was a Mk3 coach number 42101 (coach E on the 17.25 Penzance - Paddington).

Interesting that the fire brigade describe it as a fire, and accidental. My sources show it to have been smouldering and soot & clinker which had caused overheating.

Why would you have soot and clinker in a MK 3 ventilation unit unless it had caught fire?
