The Bristol Temple meads to Edinburgh service which was due to call at Chesterfield at 18:05 just sailed straight through Chesterfield station without stopping, it was a scheduled stop also.

Oh dear. These things happen. Bet the driver is kicking him/herself now & slightly embarrassed.

Errr, Smethwick!
Extra call to plug what would otherwise be a long gap for pax left behind: CrossCountry website states: "14:27 Plymouth to Newcastle due 21:28 will call additionally at Chesterfield 1905. This is due to an operational incident."

Not always driver error though.
Possibly an incorrect diagram. Normally human error in my experience.

The only recent twitter comment regarding 1S53 is about rattling panels on 220013.

I thought all XC trains stopped at Chesterfield?
Certainly not; my usual XC trains tend not to call there.

Pre-Covid around half of the trains called there; it's significantly more than half now, but some trains via Leeds which previously called there no longer do.

There was a huge police presence throughout Chesterfield today due to the football match against Grimsby - was there perhaps some issue / trouble / police advice that caused the northbound XC train to not to call (there seems to be some history with these two teams: when the two teams met at Grimsby late last year at least two successive TPE Cleethorpes services didn’t call Grimsby Town because of trouble on the platforms).

Yes trains on the Reading-Newcastle axis tended not to stop.

Potentially instructed not to stop?

Just a simple fail to call. No unusual instructions/issues/problems with football fans as far as I am aware. For whatever reason the driver didn't stop when they were supposed to. I'm sure it will be investigated and hopefully that will be that.

I am a Grimsby fan myself and was at the game, indeed a high police presence but not a sniff of trouble from what I saw, also at the time the train was supposed to stop at Chesterfield, the vast majority of Grimsby fans had already gone!

Could be something as simple as the driver not being issued a ‘Special Stop Order’, which instructs the driver to stop there train there.
Mistakes happen.

What would have been the arrangements for those supposed to have alighted - is there a train back quite soon? Presumably guards would have been notified regarding the overcarrying, so not excess fares.

Though that should've been a scheduled call by the Bristol - Edin train, not an additional stop.
