Just for your interest here is a list of professions of the drivers I recruited that I can remember!

9 ex guards
2 guys that built perkins engines
1 windscreen fitter
3 signallers
1 mortician
5 from the armed forces
1 aircraft ramp worker
1 ex BR driver (out of the loop for 10 years)
2 bus drivers
1 mechanic
1 MD of a company
1 tyre fitter
2 builders
2 trolly dollys

this is just a few and goes to prove that if you personally have what it takes you can get a job as a driver! Of course fully qualified mainline drivers always get the first shout.

Some other former occupations of drivers that I have either worked alongside, or been involved in training directly:

Police, paramedic, nurse, bus/ hgv driver, airline second officer, bank manager, estate agent, car salesman, aeronautics technician, plumber, publican, assorted management from hotels/ retail/ fast food, etc., postman, taxi driver, chef, other management/ supervisory jobs in the rail industry, rail plant fitter, qualified accountant, computer technician and yes, one retrained tube driver.
