Yes. Officially as soon as your out of competency the licence is invalid. Some TOCs allow a certain amount of time after you stop driving but a think this is only a couple of months to a couple of years.

Thanks that's what I thought, around 6 months I guess then as this is when route knowledge would be lost without refreshers.

I would still make contact with TOC's HR departments to see if they would accept you. From there point of view - you can demonstrate all the properties of a qualified train driver (just that your not currently qualified), so you would still be a good quality applicant IMO.
