Train Drivers: Time Off Between Rotas

How many days off do drivers usually get between their working weeks? I know that no two weeks are the same, but do they at least get two days or can it be one day sometimes?

Sometimes one day.

Most of the time 2 days.

Every 3 weeks 5 days.

I have 5 days off in 2 weeks time, just working Wednesday and Thursday. Sometimes only 1 day out of 7. It just depends how your roster is

Rosters are usually company specific or even depot specific sometimes and follow a pattern. Mine is

Week one sun, mon and tues off

Week two sun, wed and thurs off.

Week three sun, fri and sat off

So every 3 weeks I have 5 days off in a row

Sundays are outside the working week at my depot but 1 in 3 are rostered to work (never inside the long weekend) and you have to opt out (and find cover ) of them if you want them off

No more than 4 days in a row and no single rest days but 4 days on 2 off and back in for another 4 does happen.

Is that the same for conductors or are they different? Obviously depends on toc etc

At my depot , drivers get a minimum of 2 consecutive rest days together, no single days and Sundays are within the workiñg week.

I believe aslef policy is for a minimum of 2 consecutive rest days in rosters, but that isn't fully achieved nationwide.

Roster compilation is split between management and staff reps.

I have no pattern.

No more than 4 days in a row and no single rest days but 4 days on 2 off and back in for another 4 does happen.

I reckon this pattern of max four on, never less than two off, is better than “long weekend” off every few weeks.

The penalty for that is several on the trot, single rest day, then several more on (on the opposite shift) elsewhere on the roster.

That sounds like a brilliant roster to work! I wish my bus rosters were similar.

I have the exact same roster. Drivers and guards are the same at my TOC.

I know some tocs have a 5 day week with a week off every 5-6 weeks (rostered). Great if you have a holiday home somewhere. Can go on holiday every 6 weeks and never use any leave.
