Train drivers' supervisors

Who does directly supervise drivers at the depot. Ensures they book on and off, issues running boards, covers sicknesses holidays etc. Is there someone in a shape and form of traffic controller (clerk).

At FGW it is all done remotely, you book on using a telephone and then your late notices are faxed straight through to you.. Drivers are run mainly by resourcing in Swindon and it's them you need to ring if sick etc
They will also be the ones that contact you to see if you will do rest day working if you have indicated you would be available

Whats a running board? In 27 years as a driver I've never heard of this!

Some depots remotely book on,telephoning another location to confirm they are there.Others do it face to face.We have both systems.There is usually a driver manager(or Driver Performance Manager on our route) at remote booking locations to ensure safety critical procedures are adhered to.

At manned depots there will be a "Foreman",usually referred to by this moniker,although the job title varies over the network.Ours are called DRMs,which means driver resource manager.

A running board, I believe, is what tells bus drivers what they're doing - so I assume it's equivalent to a job card or diagram.

These bods are known by various names, train crew supervisor being the traditional one I think.

It's a sheet with departure times. Then again conductor would be having that. Except where DOO applies.
What if you book on at the depot and take the train out as its first driver.

Same principle applies as above..

As a driver you get your allocated diagram for the day then you work to those instructions unless control advise you otherwise

Depends on the yard. Some locations have depot drivers/shutters who will prep trains. At other smaller yards a mainline driver is booked to prep a train.

Hi Ultra 4.

As you've probably guessed there are drivers and train crew from all over the country here and each company (in my companies case each depot) will have different procedures.

To answer your questions so far in my patch (Northern - West)
Most depots have a Depot shift manager who books you on/off gives out notices/diagrams etc. some of the smaller depots (Wigan/Buxton) book on by phone to another depots DSM.

Driver team managers are based at each depot and those are the line managers for the actual train drivers (hire and fire etc). These assess you and ensure that you are competent to drive trains.

As for prepping units up here in the North. Trains off Stockport and Longsight are prepped by mainline drivers. Trains from Allerton and Newton Heath are prepped by Maintenance depot drivers.
